need someones view who understands

Hi I am new here. I am 29 years old and have had endometriosis since I was 16. The first Dr said it was in my head till they did a lap. Since then I have had 2 laps,2 Dnc been on the lupon and depovera. I am really sensitive to birth control and am in constant pain that now is also affecting my back. I go next week to schedule to have my uterus removed but the Dr keeps stating that I may still be in pain after. I also have had polyps and cysts and my uterus is thicker than normal. I am Leary of Dr because I feel they do not believe the pain that this causes and I am now worried that the surgery may not do nothing.

Re: need someones view who understands

If you don't feel comfortable with this MD, and if he is saying the surgery may not actually help, then I would say you need another opinion. You deserve and have every right to a doc who listens to you, and someone you feel confident in. Have you seen an endo specialist, or someone who focuses solely on min invasive gyn surgery? S/he may be able to come up with a plan that will address your pain, and they are much more likely to understand your pain patterns. Be strong, it's okay to be picky, and get all the info you can so you can make the best decision for yourself.

I agree. I would research doctors and gynecological surgeons in your area and get a 2nd opinion for sure. It sounds like your doctor isn't undertstanding your situation very well. You really shouldn't have this surgery until you are 100% certain.

I agree with the other sisters...you need a second opinion. If your pain is coming from endo and only endo then a hysterectomy is not a cure!!! Removal of the endo is the only thing that will make you feel better. I personally had my hysterectomy/BSA back in May. My surgeon also skillfully excised the endo to ensure it was gone. It can still continue to give you problems even after a hysterectomy if it is not properly removed. I hope you will look into seeing an endo specialist. This is your body and your health you are talking about here and you don't want to leave that in the hands of someone you do not trust.
Best of luck to you, dear. I hope it all works out for you.

Sadly, this happens time and time and time again. I have read articles stating women on average visit 10 different physicians before receiving their endometriosis diagnosis!

If your issues are at least partially related to the uterus, removing it could offer you some relief. But removing the uterus will not resolve the endometriosis issues. As others have mentioned, a hysterectomy, with or without an oophorectomy, is not a cure for endometriosis. The key is the skillful excision of the endometriosis implants themselves. Unfortunately, there aren't that many doctors will the skills necessary to do that. At least your doctor is sharing with you that you could still be in pain following a hysterectomy. Too many assure their patients that a hysterectomy will cure their endometriosis and then won't help them when they are in continued pain post hysterectomy.

I agree with the other ladies--you need a second opinion. And you need a second opinion from a doctor who does not practice obstetrics. Nothing against OB/GYN's, in fact, I have the same one I have had for over a decade. But when it comes to gynecological surgery, especially with endometriosis involved, you need the best of the best. That generally means the doctor's focus will be on gynecological surgery or endometriosis specifically and s/he will not be a practicing obstetrician. If one is also practicing obstetrics, s/he won't have the time necessary to perfect the gynecological surgical skills those of us with endometriosis require.

There are some stickies at the top of this forum with suggestions for finding just the right doctor. Hopefully some of the tips will be helpful for you. You will also find a Resource sticky with some extensive information.

As you can see, we are on your side! Feel free to post any of your questions and concerns and we will do our best to answer them based on our experiences and research!

Re: need someones view who understands

Thanks every one for the input. This is actually the 3rd Dr I have gone to see. And in the area where I live there are no specialists. I go tomorrow to the Dr and discuss some options. I just want to be able to enjoy my daughter and not be in pain all the time. I will keep you guys updated on tomorrow. Thanks so much it really helps to know there are others who know how I feel and understand.
