Sudden reversal of EA results and adenomyosis? - Anyone??
I am looking for some information from anyone else here that has experienced a sudden reversal in positive EA results.
I had my EA nearly 5 months ago. I had positive results for the first 4 months in terms of bleeding, no periods and no spotting. I thought that part was a success, even though I was having more and more frequent and severe cramping and pain with each passing month. I wasn't happy about the horrible pain, but I figured as long as the heavy bleeding was gone, I should be happy with the result. I saw my doctor just shy of 4 months for follow-up. I told him I was thrilled that I was no longer having bleeding, but the pain was getting worse each month. He said from my description of the pain (and my past medical history), he thought it might be adenomyosis and maybe it was time to consider a hysterectomy. He ordered another ultrasound because I had had a number of things done at the same time as the EA (that was really a tack on procedure) and he thought it would be best to see if anything else was going on. Well, wouldn't you know it, about a week after I saw him, I had my first period in 4 months. It was light and short (4 days), but the pain and cramping was awful. I had a follow-up appointment with my doctor a few days later, and I agreed to take the literature home and think about whether I really wanted to go through with the hysterectomy because it did not seem like it was an urgent necessity. Well, since that time, I have been having very light bleeding or spotting at least 2 days out of every week. First, it was about 5 days between bleeding, and now for the last week it is about 3 days before I start having cramps and bleeding again. Today, the cramps were so awful despite only spotting that I had to take a Darvocet just to get through, and I normally try to make due with Motrin at a higher dose.
How can things go downhill so quickly when the first 4 months went so perfectly? Has this happened to anyone else? I have gone ahead and scheduled a hysterectomy, but it won't be for another 5 weeks. My doctor does not know about the on/off bleeding I have been having because it all happened after my last appointment with him. It will be at least another 3 weeks before I see him again for the preop stuff. Would all of this sudden spotting and bleeding be a sign of adenomyosis, or could it be something entirely different?

Sudden reversal of EA results and adenomyosis? - Anyone??
Hi CAmich
I was found to have adenomyosis at the time of my EA - when they were trying to resect fibroids (myomectomy) they discovered some were actually large nodules of adenomyosis.
The ablation really helped my bleeding but my cramps were horrible. (They'd been bad before the ablation - but after EA they were off the chart.) Every month my cramps were even worse. A repeat u/s (only 3-4 months after the EA) showed significant worsening of the adenomyosis. (At that point they were better able to differentiate what were nodules of adenomysosis and what were fibroids < not something they can usually do since adenomyosis usually doens't show up on tests.) By then, a hysterectomy was a no-brainer.
I was told the adenomyosis was bleeding, but the blood would get trapped behind the scarred off (ablated) lining and the severe cramps were from the uterus working so hard trying to expel it.
I don't regret my ablation at all. I know several women who've had great success from theirs. Plus, having tried it and failed really made me feel I'd given a go at conservative therapy and if something didn't go right with the hyst, then at least I knew I'd tried to avoid it.
I'm not sure if your on off bleeding would be compatible with adenomyosis post-ablation or not, but I wouldn't doubt it. Let us know what you find out.
Best wishes & gentle s to you,
Beth
