Why do people say "don't worry it's not major surgery"? Is there a correct reply to these stupid comments? I say if you were the one having the surgery you would be worried. I've heard this several times. My surgery is September 2nd.

"Ever noticed it's only minor surgery when you are not the one having it."

or some version there of

Or better yet, they say, "Good luck with your procedure," as if to say, "I'm not going to call it a surgery because it's not real surgery."

It is major surgery. You are having an organ removed. My mom said the same thing before mine, it drove me nuts

I would try not to worry about it. I'm sure they are trying to make you worry less. I'm sure that they mean well. In my opinion, better that than omg, You're having a huge operation. You should be scared to death! Or worse yet, have them tell you some horror story!

I'm having surgery is Sept 2nd too. Today was my last day at work and I got all kinds of awkward comments. My least favorite was "Good luck!" as I was taking a test! I had to remind myself that they mean well and if the situation was reversed I might not know what to say either.

I am learning that when people don't know what to say they can easily stick their foot in their mouth. It is major surgery - you are having an organ removed, not having a wart burned off. All that being said, it is normal to be nervous. You've never had a hysterectomy before so it is uncharted territory. Take time to relax pamper the princess this weekend. You are soon to be on the other side.

How True! I did hear "war stories" of family and friends surgeries even if they didn't have hysterectomy! I was going bonkers hearing about their bad experiences with anesthesia or meds. Their stories grew as they repeated them over.
