Night sweats?

I just had my hysterectomy 5 days ago and for the past 2 nights I've woke up drenched in sweat. I have both my ovaries and the dr told me I wouldn't have to worry about early menopause. I sometimes feel a little bit of the chills too. Is this pretty normal or should I call my dr?

Re: Night sweats?

You ovaries can go into shock after surgery. I kept one ovary and have experienced several menopause systems. I had night sweats and a few hot flashes. Those aren't bad right now. I am experiencing insomnia right now but I am hoping that will go away too once my one remaining ovary perks back up.

Sleep in a cool room, light clothing. I also have started to use a few essential oils to help me. I use peppermint oil on my neck before bed and also clary sage to help balance my hormones. It has really helped. My doc also told me to try estroven. I didn't find that it helped me, but many women have. Just have to find what works best for your body.

Good luck! I will get better.

Re: Night sweats?

Thank you. I'm glad I'm not the only one who's experienced this.

Re: Night sweats?

It is pretty normal. I was still having them at about 10 days out with both ovaries in tact. I had a post-op that day and my doctor actually told me it was from the anesthesia and that it would pass soon. Guess What?? That very night was night sweat free! It really hasn't happened at all for me since day 12 or 13. Good luck!

Re: Night sweats?

Yes, night sweat can be normal because your ovaries might not be working properly. Most of the time, the blood supply to them gets disrupted during a hysterectomy. This diagram explains how the blood supply to the uterus and ovaries can differ for various women. According to the info in the diagram, 56% of women have their ovaries get their blood supply from both the uterine and ovarian arteries. 40% of women have the blood supply come from the ovarian artery only and 4% get the blood supply to their ovary from the uterine artery only. During surgery, the uterine artery is cut so you can see how the blood supply gets disrupted. For the 4% that have only the uterine artery providing the blood supply, it would logically seem that if that blood supply gets cut off, then the ovary would stop functioning. And for the other 56%, it would take time for the ovary to get used to have only part of its blood supply. I would assume that the 40% would be the ones feeling the least of the effects. I am not a doctor but I think that my assumptions make sense when one views the diagram. I hope this helps.

Re: Night sweats?

Hi Clacey, I'm having the exact same thing. My TAH was March 7th. I kept my ovaries. Woke up at 4am just drenched!!! I'm usually chilly at night so it was so strange. I'm hoping they don't last too long.
