How much arm strength is needed post op?
I was wondering how much you use your arms and shoulders after surgery.???
I had shoulder surgery a few weeks back and both shoulders are still painful and I have limited strenth in them. Is this going to cause any major problems?
Things have got worse this past week as my medications had to stop ready for my hysterectomy
(no anti inflamatory drugs). We all thought I would of had full use back by now.
I guess my main concern is getting out of bed and not using my tummy muscles
Any advice would be geat.
Thanks
stephanie

How much arm strength is needed post op?
I probably use my leg muscles as much as my arms for getting comfortable in bed and moving around. Of course, when you're done with the surgery you should be back on pain meds so maybe the shoulder pain won't be so bad. Just make sure you have plenty of help for the first few days. What kind of procedure are you having?

You might want to make sure someone can help you up each morning and help you back to bed at night. Have things you will need during the day left at a level you can easily reach.
And a word of advice: Let the OR staff know you had surgery on your shoulder so they can be extra careful positioning you!!!
I have a neck/shoulder injury and prior to my lap I never said anything to the OR staff. I hurt horribly after surgery. Before my hyst a few weeks later, I made sure to tell the OR staff and I was fine.
Many best wishes to you!

How much arm strength is needed post op?
If you have a cane or a walking stick it might help. I used a walking stick to put pressure on and then used my legs to help me stand up or sit down. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

Thank you for such good advice especially making sure the OR staff know. I'll make sure and talk to my surgeon about it on Monday at my pre-op.

I found using my legs to reposition me was too painful in the first few days - even moving your legs puts some stress on your abdomen!
I used my arms quite a lot - but mainly to shift positions, sonot carrying my whole weight.
I agree with Weiser - it wuld probably be useful to have someone around who can help you in and out of bed for the first few days.
Best of luck!

Arm strength is a must. It is very difficult to use abdominal muscles. You may need help getting in and out of bed. Good luck and best wishes to you.

The nurse at the hospital showed me how to roll over onto my side and then use my hands to push up into a sitting position. That keeps you from using your abdominal muscles.

I had to use my arms to lift myself up from the recliner and bed. At the beginning it was too painful to use my abdominal muscles. You will definitely need someone there to help you. Hope all goes well. Good luck!
