Need opinions please regarding cervix

I am new here, so I hope I am posting in the correct place..not sure how this works! I am scheduled for an abdominal hysterectomy on 9/18/12. I have a large fibroid, everything else being normal to my knowledge, but I am faced with the decision whether or not to remove my cervix. I have never had a bad PAP test and do not have HPV, so should I remove a healthy cervix? I realize that if I leave it then I have a chance for spotting periods and continued need for PAP tests. However, if I remove my cervix then I risk losing the pelvic floor and organ support provided by the cervix, not to mention the increased chance of more complications during surgery. I guess I would like to hear opinions from both women who have had their cervix removed and those who have kept it. I know it is a personal decision, but I just need some food for thought to help me make my decision. Thanks so much!

Re: Need opinions please regarding cervix

I had my hysterectomy in 2000 (LAVH) and the doc took the cervix. I didn't have much choice as the fibroid had grown outside the cervix and had made the cervix hard to visualize / preserve. I was concerned about the impact the loss of it would have on orgasm, but luckily, I didn't notice anything there. After my hyst, I didn't have any issues with the pelvic floor, either. Hope that helps!

Re: Need opinions please regarding cervix

Hi I had my cervix removed. My doctor recommended it as it is part of the uterus and could still get fibroids and endo and adeno and future cancer. He also said research does not conclusively support the idea it gives better pelvic support leaving it in place. plus you can still get mini periods with it remaining.

Got to be your choice on what is best for you given your own doctors advice. Good luck with your surgery.

Re: Need opinions please regarding cervix

My reasons for keeping my cervix were that mine was also "healthy" (even though i was full of fibroids) and I was nervous about a longer/ more complicated recovery and also support issues. I am almost at my one year mark and have no regrets. I never had any spotting at all since and surgery...this still amazes me I was told I would still need annual exams either way so still having to have a pap didn't make a difference to me.
Make the decision you are comfortable with as I have heard pros and cons for both. Best of luck with the surgery and a speedy recovery.

Re: Need opinions please regarding cervix

My DR had planned to remove cervix but chose to leave it intact after she went in. I have had normal paps but have had an ectopic pregnancy so there was a risk of HPV. I am glad she left the cervix intact. I am prepared for the ongoing monitoring. Just my two cents.
