Hysterectomy today TLH (kept ovaries) - gas management help

First let me say what a tremendous help this site and all you Histersisterd have been to.me leading up to my operation.

Lying in hospital bed now west of Sydney Australia. Pain quite bearable but I am having waves of abdominal gas pain which I am too worried even to try to push out.

The nurses are saying once they get me up in the morning the walking helps alot to expel the wind but if I feel the need to, within reason, I can push gently (still not sure about this)

Still have catheda in, but only oral meds are controlling any pain (which I was not expecting). Any tips would be appreciated. I am slowly going through the forum threads as well.thanks , Michelle

I agree that the walking will help. And switching positions. Left side to ride side to lying on your back. Whatever you're allowed to do. And this only lasts a few days (usually) so it'll be over soon!

Hi Michelle, welcome to the other side!
The gas is a normal consequence of a laparoscopic procedure; we have an article on that. What worked for me was peppermint tea, and getting up and moving around every so often. As for the pain, be sure to take your pain medications as prescribed, to ensure optimal control. Also be sure to use plenty of pillows! Best wishes for your continued recovery!

Hysterectomy today TLH (kept ovaries) - gas management help

Hi. 24hrs post Op up and walking the corridor, had a shower and breakfast. Canular and catheda removed and managing a pain threshold of 3-4/10 on oral drugs. To be honest I thought I'd be a lot sorer. Wind has subsided...the peppermint tea is helping alot, as is walking. Had a great sleep too. Doctor just pooped in to say 'textbook' procedure and proceeded to tell me my uterus was 13.6cm. Thats big I think?.

If hope recovery continues this smoothly and will continue to check in with all my Histersisters before me for tips. I plan to follow Dr advice to the T. Short term, more might seem do-able but at what risk to long term?

Good luck and positive thoughts to my Hytersisters that follow. Be strong, be positive and focus on 'the other side' xx
