sleeping pill risk

It's all over our news today (england) that most sleeping pills, all the ones with z in name and over the counter antihistemine sleeping aids can cause premAture death, but they say do not panic?!?!
I'm on the fence.
Thoughts?

Re: sleeping pill risk

Wow, I didn't know that. I took Zyrtec a week ago and because it didn't work, I bought sleeping pills, which contain the antihistamine Diphenhydraminhydrochlorid, yesterday.
They also didn't bring me to sleep, so I decided better to lay awake in my bed with no pills, than take the risk of whatever, that doesn't work for me.

Re: sleeping pill risk

Yikes! I was just prescribed and started taking zopiclone on Saturday. I will have to look that up! I needed some kind of medicated relief - nothing was working and I was averaging only two hours sleep a night. Nothing I had read so far made me too worried about it. Hmm.

Melatonin works great, we produce it naturally in our brain

Re: sleeping pill risk

There probably is a link, but I would think that short term use, the risk would be minimal. It was in our news today too (Australia).

I know it from American Health Stores but melatonin isn't available and also not allowed in Germany :-/
But thanks a lot for the advice. Maybe I should try to eat a huge amount of bananas before I go to bed. They contain melatonin as far as I know ;-)
