I have accepted my upcoming hysterectomy
The fact that despite having no previous medical hx that I need to have a hysterectomy. A radical one at that. Thought I was too young, but despite the multiple fibroids what made me accept this(received 3 opinions BTW) was when the GYN oncol said the cysts on my ovaries may be cancer. My mom had breast cancer and I couldn't risk ever getting cancer. I just found out in May, so it has taken some effort to accept it and deal with the reality, which I have.
I joined to learn more to prep- I am a list person so any bullet point do this, buy this, don't do that...would be much appreciated. I am happy I have time to prepare- just receioved my 6 month MRI follow from the point of my GYN's initial concerns. I am exhausted from all of the MD appts and tests- I told the MRI folks this machine should be used instead of water torture , but despite some rough spots I am trying to be positive- trying and it works most days. I also would like to know what to expect- I am freaked out about the catheter- any way I don't have to have this???
Thanks and reading through posts old and new- trying to avoid the horror stories.

Re: I have accepted
First, I'm sorry to hear you have to get this surgery due to cancer concerns. I'm sure that's tough but your attitude sounds positive, and that will help.
If you haven't already ordered the free booklet from this site, I suggest it. I find mine invaluable, although this site has the same info, but I can carry it around and refer to it when I'm not online. I'm taking it to my pre-op visit because it has a list of questions in it, plus I added my own.
You have plenty of time to prepare and while there are plenty of suggestions on what to buy, everyone's different and doesn't need the same thing, depending on the type of surgery you end up with. I bought loose nightgowns for post-surgery since most women get "swelly belly" and can't have anything tight on the stomach. I also bought a binder for my stomach but not everyone needs or uses it. I'm planning on wearing a loose sundress to and from the hospital...again, you don't want anything tight on your belly afterwards. I also bought Gas-X and stool softeners, as well as a few loose dresses for when I want to get out of my pj's.
Other than that, my main concern is food so I stocked up on high-fiber things, and I have a final shopping trip where I'll get lots of fresh fruit, yogurt, crackers and things like that. Since you're a planner, plan some easy meals for after surgery, or freeze in advance. Stick to healthy options because you want to make "going" easy on yourself.

Re: I have accepted
HappyDee, thanks so much for the support and suggestions- I will take them! I didn't think about groceries as i am not a real cook everyday kind of person, so I guess I better start planning that as well. I guess i will stock up on Amy's organic micro meals and yogurt- mainly what I live off of anyway. Yes and clothes, I guess I need to shop as i only have one pair of pants with elastic in them- whew; I am so glad I have time. I unfortunately cannot get the lapro/robotic surgery- full cut so I will have "swelly belly" - I like sounds better than cut open and bloated. I can't believe this is my life right now. Anyway, have to just move it along. I think I will look into a shaper as well. I did ask since you are in there, can I get some fat cut out too? LOL the response was no of course, but I think the support will help, sounds like it should anyway and I need all the help I can get. Thanks again! Be encouraged and be well!

Re: I have accepted
You are so welcome! This site has been a godsend to me since I didn't have the first clue about hysterectomies when I first started looking into it. A full cut is what I'm getting, too. Hey, just more battle scars to show how strong we are, lol!

Re: I have accepted
I didn't find this site until after my surgery which might have been for the best in some ways. Everyone is different and has different reasons for the surgery as well as different recovery experiences. I might have read post of ladies struggling with recovery and been freaked out and started doubting my decision. I tend to fret over messiness in my house, so I made sure I gave my house a good cleaning right before the surgery so I could recoup in a relatively clean and orderly environment. My appetite was impacted and I wasn't really hungry for the first week or so after so I didn't regret not cooking and freezing meals ahead of time, but that is a good idea anyway. If you fond you are not as hungry, you can leave the meals frozen until you are. My husband likes to cook so I just let him handle what he wanted to prepare for himself and the family. It would have been helpful to stock up on ginger ale. I could drink that when I didn't really feel like anything else. I took a stool softener from day one and had no problems whatsoever with bowel movements. In reading posts here, that is one big complaint so you want to be proactive there. My doctor recommended Colace which is what I used. The one thing I wasn't prepared for was underwear. I had to go out after a few days home and buy some "granny panties" that were about a size too big and were high waisted enough to go above my incisions. I got the super soft nylon kind that are stretchy and comfy. And if you are a reader, stock up on a few good books for the weeks ahead (depending how fast you read). Some days I did not have the mental concentration to read and Netflix was a blessing. Good luck.

Re: I have accepted my upcoming hysterectomy
Thanks Ms. Robhan! Yes I am trying to avoid the horror stories- everything around me must be as positive as possible! No exceptions! I too do not wear granny panties and that is another one for the shopping list. I don't have a husband or anyone else in my circle that likes to cook, I guess birds of a feather I will try and predict what I will want, although honestly besides yougurt I can be flaky when it comes to food. I will get some Colace, I need to start writing all of this down. Thanks again, appreciate it and hope you are well!
