Upcoming hysterectomy 12/26: ON-Q pain pump anyone?

I will be going home with this and have to remove it after 5 days. It seems very cool, delivers local anesthetic right to the surgery site. Has anyone used one or will go home with one too?

This does sound like a great idea.

I have not used one, but we have lots of women on this site. Hopefully one with experience will see this post and respond.

Hi Sweetie. Are you referring to the epidural anesthesia? I had the epidural placed under sedation prior to the surgery and it was dosed immediately after surgery. The anesthesiologist had to come into the recovery room with a large dose of Marcaine to jumpstart things! After that it was fine. I was allowed to push the button every 20 minutes but the epidural was steadily infusing. When you push the button it just gives your dose a little boost. Having the epidural in place was WONDERFUL. I was able to move around without any grogginess and my pain was kept under control. I had it for three days. It was removed the night before I went home. It did not interfere with the sensation to pee!! If you have any questions, reach out to me!!!!

Re: Upcoming hysterectomy 12/26: ON-Q pain pump anyone?

It's different the button pain pump in hospitals. I've had those before and they are awesome! But the on q is a bag pouch filled with anesthetic and a tube placed into a hole in my abdomen. The drugs seep out of the tiny catheter into my abdominal cavity for a few days even when home. So I will walk around wearing this bag attached to my stomach.

I had the ON-Q pump it was great. The tubes were taped to my stomach and the anesthesia ball was in a bag like a fanny pack that hangs around the neck. I went home with mine the day after surgery. Mine lasted about two days and the doctor removed it at my first post op visit on day four. Best wishes on your surgery and recovery!
