6 days post hysterectomy: Son just woke up with stomach bug--what can I do to protect myself?

Not even a week post-op, and my kiddo came down with the stomach bug an hour ago (in the middle of the night)! I tried to keep him restricted to one bathroom upstairs, but, of course, dad won't do...he wanted me. I told him to lay on the floor with his blanket away from me. Naturally, he had to run to vomit again & did so in the bathroom I have been using downstairs. Now I have two germ-laden zones!

Slowly went upstairs & disinfected as best I could. Normally, that is disinfectant, hot water, scrubbing. I can't bend over and scrub (and thankfully all incidents made it to the toilet), so I have been spraying a stream of Lysol on hard surfaces non-stop---light switch, door knob, toilet, sink, etc.---flushing toilets repeatedly, scrubbing hands with soap, using antibacterial gel.

What else can I do? I am so not up to taking care of a sick kid, and I am desperately afraid of getting sick, not even a week post-op...help!

Re: 6 days post hysterectomy: Son just woke up with stomach bug--what can I do to protect myself?

Finally, it stopped. Disinfected as best I could. I sent him to bed. If he feels better later, going to make him take a bath. I just wish I could do laundry; I just can't. He made it to the toilet at all times, but I am a germaphobe about clothes & bedding too, & usually wash it all. A friend is coming tomorrow to clean the house & help. I told her to bring disposable gloves & a mask, put laundry in a trash bag & put it right in the wash. She was supposed to help today, but I postponed it for her safety. Hoping it is one of those short-lived bugs & my husband & I don't get it! My son is understanding & told me to leave any food or drink (once he wants it) outside his door. I gave him water. I sure hope he can sleep it off now & is OK. I will be on edge the next few days!

Hopefully it was only food poisoning. I wonder if our immune systems are boosted from our procedures? You know, extra antibiotics from iv during surgery. I think the lysol was a great idea.

I hope you're right about the boosted immunity! I doubt it was food poisoning. That bug has been ripping through school for a while. Amazed he took this long to get it! He seems OK now, but I am worn out & praying I did enough disinfecting to stop it in its tracks. Can't imagine being ill that way right now!

Is there any way Dad can scrub the bathroom today? Rather than waiting until tomorrow? And maybe throw the load of stuff in the washer?

It would be good to get that stuff cleaned up ASAP.

Re: 6 days post hysterectomy: Son just woke up with stomach bug--what can I do to protect myself?

My husband is working 9 AM to 9 PM. I called a friend who used to work in a nursing home & totally doesn't mind the cleaning. I did clean last night, just couldn't bend & scrub as usual. Probably still overdid it!

Good news...My son is 100 percent better! Thank God! I gave him a trash bag & told him to put all his bedding & PJs, etc. in it & take it down to the washer. Told my friend to bring a mask & gloves just to be safe. She will do the laundry & deep clean the bathrooms. Thank goodness!

My son took a bath & changed into clean PJs...singing, playing, eating...you would never guess the middle-of-the-night ordeal! I just took a shower. After all the goings on, stairwell climbing, no sleep, etc., I am wiped out & so very glad my friend is coming by later to help!

I got the flu one week post op. My hubby and sons got it about 3 days post op and passed it to me. It was terrible. I hope you come out okay. It sounds like you are doing everything right

Wash your hands often. Lysol every light fixture and door knob he might have touched (no bending required) and up your liquid intake. Vitamin C wouldn't hurt and aides the healing process (whether you get the flu or not). Best wishes!

Oh i lived that nightmare...my kids and I all caught a stomach bug 5 days post op. Needless to say it was worrible. My incisions hurt so bad and i was so weak. It lasted for 24 hrs. Thankfully we recovered fine. I was so afraid i was going to mess something up. Well im glad you didn't catch it.
