Surgery Decision

I've only been a member for a week, so this is my first post. I think my experience is somewhat different - I've decided after reading all of these other posts that different personalities react differently to similar situations.

I'm 46 and have been on the pill since 18. I've had heavier periods over the past few years but little pain. My doctors noted small fibroids over the last few years, but they weren't significant. Less than two weeks ago I was out with my 13 year old son at a movie when I had a major bleeding episode (had run two pill-packs back to back for vacation purposes, NOT my scheduled period). Hurrying to the restroom I discovered a blood clot the size of my fist - scary! But still no pain, not even a cramp.

Went to my doctor the next morning, had an ultrasound. Even I could see the fibroids, eight of them, one was 3 inches in size, a 13 week size uterus and projected ademomyosis - I could see the spongy areas on the screen.

I was on the internet all weekend and found this site among others and figured out options. Went to my doctor the next Tuesday for a consult, took hubby. Decided that the only way to deal with all areas of concern for me was to remove the uterus - my mother had a similar situation years ago and was happy with her surgery.

For me, as a high school teacher, the risk of having that type of unanticipated bleeding in the middle of class is unacceptable. I'm also unwilling to have these large things growing inside of me while my uterus gets "sicker." My preops are Tuesday and Wednesday, surgery is on Thursday. I'm planning on keeping my ovaries.

I've stocked up on nightes, bought a swelly-belly band , stocked up on books, cleaned my house, got the prayer teams notified, have grandma on standby for my little guy and am quite comfortable with my decision. My husband even bought me an Ipod to distract me

With six week projected recovery I will hopefully be able to start the school year on time.

Thanks for all of you who made this site possible - it certainly was helpful as I was exploring options.

God bless.

ckd:

I think you're absolutely right about the different personalities. I know my doctor said that in his experience that the women who went into surgery with a positive attitude were the ones who had the easier recoveries. I think if you're the type who can just accept the necessity and go ahead it makes a big difference.

Sounds like you're off to a great start. Just bear in mind that complications can occur, regardless of attitude!

Good luck.

It sure sounds as if you have the right attitude going in, and that'll be a big help in your recovery. I understand about unanticipated bleeding being unacceptable. I'm a newspaper reporter and never knew where I'd be or what I'd be doing on any given day. Now, IF I go back to work there, at least that's one less thing I'll have to worry about.

Good luck! I hope you have a speedy and uneventful recovery!
