day surgery hyst ?

Is it ever day surgery?
Has anyone had their uterus removed and gone home the same day?

day surgery hyst ?

Tabitha:

Some types of hysts can be done as a "short-stay" or "same-day" procedure, which usually means staying 23 hours (IOW, overnight). Usually it's the laparoscopic-assisted procedures, but some vaginal hysts have been treated this way too.

It has advantages and disadvantages; you're getting less exposure to infection risks, etc, and you do get pain control in that first 24 hours. For some, however, 24 hours may not be enough, and you do need some extra vigilance those first days at home. A lot depends on why you're having your surgery, and whether you're having ovaries removed, supracervical, etc.

A lot of women want a same-day procedure so they can get home, where it's arguably more comfortable; however, if getting home means a return to daily responsibilities, then a couple of days in the hospital may be better. It's very easy to underestimate the impact of this very major procedure when you go home within 24 hours, and to try to return to normal activities as soon as possible; however, this is NOT recommended!

We've had women who, for family reasons, elected a short-stay procedure and then found that it was difficult or impossible to get the rest that they needed at home; others find that they sleep better at home. Some insurers will only approve "short stay" with certain types of procedures.

Let us know what is anticipated, and we can help you further. Also, if you click on "search" at the top of the page (little letters ) and type in "same day" you may find a LOT of posts discussing this very subject!

Good luck to you, and welcome to Hystersisters!

day surgery hyst ?

Hi Audrey,

Thank you for the prompt reply. I tried searching on DAY SURGERY and at your suggestion SAME DAY. Each search resulted in the following message:

The search term you specified (day) is under the minimum word length (4) and therefore will not be found. Please make this term longer.

I'm expecting to have surgery on 12/22/03 to address pelvic pain due to endometriosis and/or adenomyosis. I've just found a new doctor who does excision surgery on endo. (Not done in my previous 3 laps with 2 other doctors). This new doctor has me feeling very positive about the surgery and it's the first time I've discussed the possibility of a hysterectomy with a doctor and felt like it made sense.
One of the possibilities is that he will remove my uterus, leaving the cervix and my ovaries. He showed me how he makes the cuts and how he removed the tissue/uterus through the lap incisions. He assured me that the lab is aware of his removal technique and has no problem with the biopsy afterward.
I was amazed to hear him say that most likely I could go home the same day and that recovery time is much less than with a traditional hysterectomy. (although he did state that recovery time can vary greatly by patient)

Tomorrow I'm having a colonoscopy and the results of that will determine if 12/22 is a go or no go.

Tabitha:

If you type the search term "day*" ( without the quotes) you should be able to get what you need; "short-stay" should also yield some results.

Many doctors doing a hyst for endo will NOT leave the ovaries; if they continue to produce estrogen, whatever leftover endo you have can continue to multiply. Have you discussed estrogen replacement with your doctor as well? Most of us with endo stay at least some months estrogen-free in an attempt to "starve out" any endo that may remain.

I realize that a lot of questions are still unanswered for you, but hopefully in the next few weeks you'll be able to find out more. The colonoscopy isn't that bad (well, other than the prep ) but it also may not eliminate the possibility of endo around the outside of the colon (where I had mine).

A laparoscopic hyst is still major surgery, so be prepared for a significant recovery period. Most of our LSH ladies do seem to recover faster, but still need to respect the fact that they've been through a major procedure!

Good luck with the search. I'd forgotten that terms needed to be more than three letters, but adding in the asterisk should solve that problem for you.
