Cancelled my surgery

I haven't posted for awhile since I've been struggling with my decision regarding my hyster.
My husband and I have decided not to go forward with the surgery as it was scheduled (September 1). It feels like the right decision. This site was so helpful during my search and the many ladies who wrote me were such a blessing and encouragement. Thank you all.
I need more time to weigh the options. I spoke to the nurse in the GYN's office today about cancelling and she said that the Dr. was OK with me postponing it but wanted me to go forward and not wait a year or anything.
I am not so sure that I really need the drastic measure of surgery. I'm only 44 but I have several large fibroids and one ovarian cyst. However; I am not in any pain (except for a few cramps one or two days a month), my cycles are regular and last 5-7 days at the most and I just have 1-2 days of extremely heavy bleeding. The doctor seems most concerned about the anemia and blood loss. Last September I had a blood transfusion to up my hemoglobin count which was at about 6. I believe this was due to many years of heavy bleeding without taking extra iron or making adjustments.
I have had good hemoglobin counts since September, up to about 12.

So as of today, no surgery for me. The September 1 date is cancelled. I will be sticking around this site, however, to keep researching and keep up to date on whats happening to everyone. Who knows, maybe I'll need to reschedule someday.

Thanks,
Weebo

If you're comfortable with your decision, then that's the right choice for you right now. I think that whatever route we take we have to be completely sure that that's what we really want. If not, we could come out of this doubting ourselves, our DRs, everything. Good luck to you!

Cancelled my surgery

Hi,
Im scheduled for 9/12 and sound very much like you. Im 44 with multiple fibroids, not huge like some have, more like an inch for the biggest one. I have heavy bleeding for 3-4 days and usually am finished within 7 days. My problem is with horrible back pain and for the last 6 months or so nausea for the first day or two. I had a D&C in March and it made no difference, only last month my cycle was almost normal. I have one more to go through before 9/12. My thought was to cancel too as I could live with this. My husband disagreed and knows how badly I have felt before last months cycle. It is overwhelming to me sometimes. I scheduled in June so I allowed 3 months to wait and it was probably too long as Im jittery now. Im glad you were able to come to a final decision and be happy with it. I guess a little later this month will push me one way or another.

Weebo,
I bet you have just been on an emotional ride wondering what is the right thing to do, I am glad that you and your DH were able to come to a decision about what is right for you. If you are never comforatable with the idea of a hyst and your doc insists, please get a second opinion if you still feel against it. It has to be the right decision for you!
Hugs,
Aimee

You are doing the right thing by giving yourself more time to weigh all of the options. I, too had fibroids and anemia. I got by taking Chromagen Forte iron pills twice a day during my period every month for about seven years. You could discuss that with your doctor to see if that might be an option for you. I wasn't having any pain either other that normal menstrual cramps. I was hoping that the iron pills would get me to menopause, but I didn't quite make it that far. It's not the most pleasant way to get through the anemia, but it might keep you from getting so anemic all of the time until you either reach menopause or decide to have the surgery. You'd probably have to consider how your cyst fits in to all of this also. Just thought I'd share and hope that it might be helpful.
