Pleased with the outcome of my surgery
I just wanted to post a quick note to those of you who are in the pre-op or early on in your post-op phase. I had my surgery on February 17, 2009 and it was the BEST thing I have ever done for myself. I did not even realize just how badly I felt until I no longer had that pain.
I know you are worried about going through surgery and what will happen to your body after - we all have those fears. Your kids and husband will be fine, the house will get messy at times, but that's ok! Pamper yourself and don't sweat the small stuff.
You will be sore for a while after surgery and depending on whether or not you have your ovaries removed, you may have to deal with HRT. I really wanted my doctor to leave my ovaries, but I ended up having severe endometriosis. My doc told me that he felt that my ovaries were producing excessive (very excessive) amounts of estrogen, so he thought it would be best to get rid of them. I'm so glad he did! Now I am on an Estraderm patch and I feel really good hormonally.
I was afraid I would never want to have sex again (hub was a little afraid of that too! hehe). This fear turned out to be unfounded. My sex life is very good now.
I just wanted to write this note to the forums to offer support to all of you who are at the beginning stages of your surgery.
I mean this from the bottom of my heart. It is the best thing I have ever done. Good luck to all of you!
Kelly

Re: You will not regret this surgery!
Thanks for the positive post!
My TLH was April 5th, so almost 4 weeks out and I can already tell that this was the perfect decision for me! And I had complications, and I"m still glad I did it.
It's nice to see positive posts around here, as there are so many great stories out there!

Re: You will not regret this surgery!
Thank you so much for sharing! I had a VH 4/26 due to progressed pre cancer cells and fibroid tumors. Because I had no real pain the whole idea of a hysterectomy seemed so abstract to me.
Every single woman I spoke to who have had a hysterectomy said it was the best thing ever. One friend I told said she was so happy for me! That kind of encouragement really helps while one is recovering!

Re: Pleased with the outcome of my surgery
(((Kelly))) I'm very happy for you that you had such a positive outcome that you feel that the surgery was the best thing you ever did.
I just feel I need to say that, for many women, a hysterectomy is definitely not the best thing they ever did. For some, it marks the beginning of a domino effect involving many serious health conditions. It may feel like trading one set of problems for another.
It's not possible for us to assure others that *their* outcome will be positive. We can hope, or pray, that it will; but there are no guarantees. It's important that women facing the surgery decision understand the range of outcomes that are possible. It's great to be optimistic, have positive thoughts, etc., but sometimes bad things happen anyway.
I was, outwardly at least, very healthy when I had my hyst eight years ago. Since then I have had four other surgeries, directly or indirectly related to the hyst/BSO and changes that resulted. My general health is definitely not what it was eight years ago. I feel I've aged about twenty years - and I consider myself lucky in that I'm fairly well balanced on HRTs.
So... by all means, celebrate... enjoy the new lease on life the surgery has given you. I just need ladies who might be reading this who haven't yet had surgery to know that while many stories do have happy endings, there are no guarantees.
s,
-Linda
