2 weeks post-op a total vaginal hysterectomy with an oops! UPDATED - ovary removed

I am so upset! I need advice. At my 2 week post-op visit on 9/20/2016 I told my Dr. that I needed HRT because I had started having hot flashes. He looked at me funny and told me that shouldn't happen because he left my ovary. I told him, no. it was to be removed also. The reason for the surgery was because of recurring very painful cysts and irregular and sometimes heavy bleeding. He checked the post-open report and confirmed that it had not been removed. He apologized over and over. Sent me to have a lab test called an FSH and told me he would call me with results the next day. Didn't get the call yesterday but did get results of test with a message from him sent to my online clinic account. He said that my ovary was non-functioning and I would need HRT and again apologized for not removing the ovary. He said he would call me today. I want this ovary gone. It can still grow cysts and can still become cancerous. I don't know what to do. I like my doctor But this is a BIG mistake since I clearly read the procedure I was to have done that day and he must not have. Please give me some advice

oh my, what an unfortunate incident. Feel so sorry for you. However, your doctor was negligent. It might be time to see another physician. You did have major surgery recently, so please continue to rest up.

Wow, how crazy! When I was in the operating room, she repeated everything that was on my consent form so that I would know that she was doing the right surgery.
Good luck. Hope everything works out!

the "oops" is fixed

After finding out at my 2 week post total vag hysterectomy that my GYN left my ovary after we had agreed it would be removed I was devastated.
He had made a mistake and he knew it. After contacting a patient advocate at the hospital and discussing the situation with risk management I was adamant I wanted it out asap.
Well with the hospital footing the bill I had it removed laproscopically 2 days ago. I feel pretty good. Just hate that I have to recover again.

Good for you for advocating for yourself, good for your doc for admitting he'd screwed up and good for the hospital for doing the right thing! Here's hoping your second recovery will be smooth and fast. :-)

Sorry you have to recover again but glad you convinced the hospital to make it right. The morning of my TVH the anesthesiologist told me they were removing my ovaries and I was like ummm, no they aren't so he "changed his notes" After that, I made ever person who came to me pre-op repeat to me that my ovaries were not being removed!

That was a fear of mine when I went in for the surgery! One of the nurses mentioned removing my ovaries and I was like, "Nooooo ma'am! They are staying right where they are!" After that, I did what you did and made every person involved in my surgery repeat to me that my ovaries are staying!! LOL

Re: the "oops" is fixed

I considered taking a Sharpie and writing on my abdomen exactly what was supposed to be removed during surgery. In the end, I decided that this would be overkill, but it certainly was something I thought about.

Re: the "oops" is fixed

The head OR nurse met with me the morning of my surgery and started by prompting me to tell him what the surgery was for, and what was going and what was staying. He confirmed that it matched their notes and we were all on the same page. I noticed a lot of protocol things that they did in prepping me that were reassuring. Pretty much every person who met with me that morning - the prep nurse, the OR nurse, the anesthesiologist, and my doc - walked me through what would be happening with prep and the surgery and recovery. It was reassuring even if a little bit repetitive. I've read a few things here and there on processes to reduce hospital errors and they really seemed to get it and have good practices and procedures in place. I didn't mind the repetition at all.

Tammie, I'm sorry you had to go through that twice but good for you for advocating for yourself and making it right! Best of luck with your second recovery.
