Hysterectomy soon and scared!!! Update: consult 10/6 - how soon will surgery be scheduled?
Hello,
I am new here! I am 40, and having my uterus, tubes, and cervix out soon. I am so scared, I have horrible anxiety. Unfortunately I did the wrong thing and started googling things and got even more scared. There are so many horror stories. I am doing this because of unexplained constant bleeding. I'm just fed up! Please share if you have had a good experience. Also which do you feel is better an abdominal or laproscopic? I've had 2 c-sections all ready.

Re: Having a hysterectomy soon and scared!!!
Hi Junip, you are completely normal, but my advice is to stop reading and googling until after your surgery. I joined hystersisters when I was exploring options, but once I decided on my surgery, I took a break until post op. I had a really good experience. I was scared to death, having never had surgery nor been in a hospital before. My dr was great, and the entire staff at the hospital put me at ease immediately. I actually felt better when I was being prepped for surgery than the days leading up to it. I had my surgery at 7 am, had to be at the hospital at around 5. Everything went very smoothly, multiple medical professionals of all types came in and out of the area where I was waiting and introduced themselves, asked me questions and explained their role. I could see that I wasn't going to be neglected, lol. I went right in on time, remember getting to the OR, and the next thing i remember was hearing someone asking if I would mind staying on the maternity ward. Got to my room by about 12, my husband was waiting there. They helped me into my bed and by that time I was alert. I felt really pretty good. I found out that they had tylenol and toradol in my iv instead of narcotics, which I was really happy to hear. I really wasn't in pain. I was up and walking later in the day, they took my iv out a little later and I never took anything else for pain. I didn't have any big issues with gas or constipation. In the morning, they woke me up at 5 am to take blood, I showered and dressed in my own clothes. I was slightly nauseated, which I think was due to the meds with nothing in my stomach. I ate some breakfast and felt much better and then paced the halls until they got tired of watching me and let me go. Other than the first day home, I was out and about at least for a little while every day. The first week I was exhausted by about 6 pm and went to bed early, but was never in bed during the day. At a week I was allowed to drive and drove myself to get my nails done. At my 2 week post op, my dr told me I could go back to work whenever I felt up to it so I went the following monday. My recovery continued smoothly and comfortably until I was released for all activities (except sex:had to wait 3 more weeks) at my 6 week appt. The only blip in my recovery really had nothing to do with the surgery, I had an asthma attack brought on by anesthesia, so I was coughing a lot which didn't feel great but wasn't awful either. That lasted a few days until the meds got it under control. Oh and I felt better immediately post surgery than I had for the couple of years leading up to it. I immediately knew I had made a good decision. I had abdominal, was a little disappointed not to be able to do something less invasive, but I can say that my recovery was much easier than many people with less invasive procedures. I think a part of it is how good/comfortable your dr is with the procedure you're using. Good luck!

Thank you for your reply! It's nice to hear a positive experience. I want abdominal because I feel after having the two c-sections, I know what to expect in terms of healing.

Re: Having a hysterectomy soon and scared!!!
"Unexplained constant bleeding" - hmmm, have you had an endometrial biopsy to check for endometrial cancer? If there's a risk that cancer is present, you want the uterus removed in one piece.

Re: Having a hysterectomy soon and scared!!!
I had my hysterectomy done using the Da Vinci robot so only had 5 small incisions. It was a lot easier then I had expected and I had no complications. Recovery went very well and was fast.
I spent 1 night in the hospital then home. My anesthesiologist gave me meds to prevent nausea so I had none of that post op and was even able to eat dinner that night . Was walking 2 hrs after getting to my room. I went home around noon the next day and took it easy that afternoon. The next day I was up walking at a park and having lunch at a deli with a friend. Each day I increased the time I was walking and by the end of the week was walking my dogs.
My biggest thing has been fatigue as after the walks or doing a few things I need a nap but my doctor told me I would feel that way as it is a major surgery. I have had just a wee bit of swelly belly in the evening I think the fact I walked as much as I did helped as movement gets your blood and lymphatic system circulating better.
I had mine due to endometrial cancer and they are pretty certain they got it all so no need for any further treatment. Really is not even close to being what I expected it to be as I never imagined recovery to be this easy.
Take some big breaths and try to relax as the stress is doing more harm then good. You can do this.

Re: Having a hysterectomy soon and scared!!!
Hey Katie! Do yourself a favor and stay off of google, it is not a good thing for you right now. You will freak yourself out more than anything else.
Personally I would let the dr decide what the best approach is because they are the experts. Usually the least invasive option is the fastest to heal.
I had to have an abdominal procedure, vertical cut from my belly button to mid pubic bone because they needed room to get the giant mass I had in my ovary out. I never had a c-section but I think the recovery is a bit different because it's more than a cut across your belly, there's a lot of stuff removed and other stuff moved around. But your dr could tell you better.
This site is super helpful in finding support and information.
I know it's hard not to worry, but try to think of other things and stay positive.

Re: Having a hysterectomy soon and scared!!!
I've never had a c-section myself, but I've seen a lot of posts from other sisters saying that their abdominal hysterectomy recovery was nothing like their c-section recovery. A few say the hysterectomy recovery was easier, most say it was harder.
I had an abdominal hysterectomy myself, with a 7" vertical incision from my navel to my pubic bone. I had an easy recovery, with no complications and minimal pain, but it was definitely a *long* recovery.

Hi Katie. I can't share any words of wisdom yet. Because I'm brand new here as well but saw your post and had to reach out and tell you that your not alone
We have identical stories, age and problems! Hope we both survive this journey and come out kicking*as!

Re: Having a hysterectomy soon and scared!!!
Hi, Katie and Sasha. This is my first post here and I'm scared, too. My surgery date is Oct. 4 and I have been trying to read more on this site as opposed to others across the web. Thank you so much to the ladies who have been there for your input. I have so many fears and have considered backing out a few times. It helps to hear those who say they feel better now after the surgery. I'm hoping that that's the case for me (and y'all, too!).
