what med will i get to go home on

I am due for my hysterectomy on 2/17, I'm afraid I won't get pain meds to go home and help me with. My aunt said they would give me 7.5 mg of Lortab what was everyone else on?

what med will i get to go home on

I had two weeks of percoset and two weeks of an mega pill of motrin. I took all the percoset and then switched to the motrin which made me sick to my stomach - it was so bad I stopped taking them and just took regular tylenol. I did have one day of "cole turkey" from the percoset - my mom kept giving them to me in twos and didn't wean me off of it very well - when I went back after two weeks for a check-up (and after I had gotten off everything) the doctor said I should have taken two pills every four hours for the first five days at home and then down to one pill and then lengthened the time in between - seemed really complicated to me - my mom said they just gave her the perscriptions and never told her anything about weaning me off - the bottle said two pills every four hours as needed - so she followed that. We laugh about this now because I bring up the fact that maybe I didn't need two pills every four hours and she insists that I did so she could clean out my house and I wouldn't complain too much. I'm still looking for things that I think she threw away! LOL!!!! All I remember during the first two weeks is my mom coming into the bedroom with things asking me if it was okay if she tossed it - I think I said yes more than no - and you should have seen her throwing things down from the attic - she's a neat freak!!! Boy that brings back memories.

It depends on your doctor...

I had been taking Percocet on and off for about 2 years before my surgery so I was sent home with 40 Percocet 7.5mgs... I had to call the doc for a refill about 3 weeks later.
I think it really depends on your doctor's attitudes about pain management and narcotics as to what and how much he/she'll prescribe for you. Talk to your doc BEFORE your surgery.

Well, I doubt if my doc gives me percocet, for one he was hesitant about giving me lortabs, he is my 2nd opinion doc, the 1st doc gave me about 4 prescriptions for Lortab 5's, he gave between 25-30 at a time and the doc that is doing my hyst gave me 20 on the 7th, Note that my surgery is on the 17th so I have a while yet before being pain free...I hurt so bad I doubled up to make them 10 at the times my pain level reached 8-9 and now have 2 left and am afraid to call and ask for more thinking he will think I am a druggie or something. So I bet he wont give me anything after my surgery unless its like 10 Darvocets or something, who knows. I am afraid to call the office and tell them what I did, what should I do? Wait another day or two then call? or just tough it out? My pain is about a 7-8 but when I took the pills they went down to a 5 which was great! I just feel embarrassed and guilty for asking for these meds because there is a lot of rumors about people being addicted to them in my community. I could of course buy these off the streets, but gosh I would be a fool for one and secondly, I dont think I could do that, I'm not that type of person at all. Opinoins are greatly appreciated ladies, thanks!

My surgeon didnt give me anything for pain when I left. But I was quick to call my family doctor when I got home and he gave me demerol. My surgeon even stopped the nurses from giving me pain meds the night before i was released to go home. I was in tears for the night.

Yeah it was crazy.. he told them to give me tylonel extra strength.. which doesnt help me if I have a headache let alone that surgery. I cried the whole night... until I remembered I had demerol in my purse.. and I snuck one of them. I was up and packing .. going to go home I was so mad. But if I left without getting discharged then if anything happened they wouldnt be held accountable.

Sigh.. so glad that is over with.

Hi!

With a surgery date of February 17, you should have plenty of time to contact your doctor to ask what he does for possible pain management. Why don't you give his office a call?

Did you ever consider the possibility that you will not even NEED anything for pain? I had a TAH/BSO two summers ago and took absolutely nothing (not even aspirin or Tylenol) after I left the hospital. The day after surgery I had regulated morphine in my IV, but I seldom even used that. My surgery was extensive (even had an umbilical hernia repair!) and lots of body parts were manhandled and relocated. The doctor gave me a prescription for percocet before I went home. My husband insisted that I have it filled just in case, but I ended up flushing the pills down the toilet several months later...untouched. I don't know why I didn't feel uncomfortable pain, but that was just my experience. When my daughter was born by C section many years ago I hallucinated with demerol, and I hated the whole med thing. Maybe that was in my subconscious during the hysterectomy recovery and the nasty memory worked to ward off pain!

I hope you don't need pain meds and that your whole experience is a positive one. I'm convinced that so much of life is in the attitude. But it probably wouldn't hurt to check with the doc, too!

Blessings.

I was given a prescript. for Oxycodine when I left the hospital, but my doctor said that if I could get by on Aleve to do so since pain meds tend to make you constipated. I'm happy to say that I didn't need the Oxycodine and did fine on Aleve alone. I was miserable (constipated with alot of gas) from the pain meds during my hospital stay and didn't want to go through that at home too. Goodluck with your surgery and be a good princess when you get home, rest and let others pamper you.
