anybody here thats been through hernia repair, i need your feedback....what did you feel like prior to being diagnosed with a hernia (incisional or inguinal)?...how were you diagnosed?....if you've had it surgically repaired, how long did the surgery take?...what was the pain scale afterwards?....any and all feedback is greatly appreciated!!

Hi,

I had a TAH w/ BSO was in December '02 and followed up with an incisional hernia repair in early May '03. The Dr. told me that hernias occur in 10 % of post-op cases.

My hernia popped up in the latter part of April and was small -- about 3/4 of an inch. It popped out of my stomach and when I would try to pop it back in, it liked to pop right back out. It was also very painful due to swelling.

I had it repaired in Day surgery and, at the same time, the surgeon checked the rest of my incision to make sure it was ok.

I was in a some pain afterwards, (the extent of my pain was more severe due to my medical history, i.e, previous intestinal surgeries) . So you may want to check with other sisters about the pain level after a repair. You may also want to try a search by using the word hernia, as I know other sisters have had this too!

Take care and let us know how you're doing.

Best,
Hysterhelp

I had an umbilical hernia repair at the same time as my 3rd c-section. I didn't really notice any pain from the hernia repair because the c-section pain was worse. It healed quickly and I have had no further problems. I do remember the the hernia being quite painful prior to repair. I was about egg sized. If I would put pressure on it and "push" it back in place the pain would lessen.

I think I may have a hernia also. I have a lot of discomfort in my stomach and I have a egg size lump that pops in and out. I can push it around and it sort of hurts. What are some of the other symptoms? I go to the doctors on Monday to find out what is going on.

thanks for the replies...........i started complaining the day after surgery (07/03) about, what i now know, is a hernia....i have been dismissed by my GP, my (old) gyn, nurses, and an ER dr....symptoms include a buldge in my lower abdomen, a strange pulling/tugging sensation that runs from the abdomen down into my groin, a feeling as if my insides are falling out..a heaviness in the lower abdomen/groin area..i have to hold that area when i sneeze/cough/etc...i have to prop a pillow or something under that side of my abdomen when i lay on my left side..also, sneezing/coughing/laughing/any type of exertion to my lower abdominal muscles causes a "falling out" feeling in the genital area..the new GYN thinks it related to the hernia...i changed GYN's and when i started describing the symptoms she said 'its a hernia"....then inspected it and came to the diagnosis..she has referred me to a general surgeon, who i see on 2/23.
