Should DH plan to move to the couch?

I'm a little worried that movement in my bed post-op will cause me pain and contribute to restlessnes, but emotionally I want my DH with me. Should he plan to move to the couch? I don't have a recliner, so I will be in bed.

If I were you, I would not plan on having him move to the couch. Emotional needs will be very strong and having him there beside you may be emotionally good for both of you. Only if the movement etc causes you pain, you could ask him to move at that time.
I'm betting having him there will be better than not.

Re: Should DH plan to move to the couch?

Hi luvmycop1992

This is a pretty individual thing. I had my husband move to the couch for the first week after my surgery. He is a big guy, and when he rolls over or gets up in the middle of the night, it can sometimes feel like a tidal wave.

As it turned out, I had a very difficult time sleeping for that week, and I often would be awake at 3 in the morning, grateful to have my laptop (and HysterSisters!) available in my husband's usual spot. I think my husband did better, too, having that break from my princess-y demands at night

He was really good about being with me in the bedroom at other times throughout the day and evening, so I felt that my needs for contact and emotional support were taken care of.

If it's something you're thinking about, you could make sure everything is ready for either option.

Re: Should DH plan to move to the couch?

I didn't have all that much pain after my surgery or at least none that couldn't be controlled with pain meds, but I did have insomnia. I found that I was the one who was up and lying on the couch at night. I'd just plan to play it by ear but I don't think it's necessary to assume your DH will need to move to the couch.

Re: Should DH plan to move to the couch?

I was wondering the same thing but am having relatively little to no pain so it was wonderful to have my DH there during the night. I did have extra pillows around me in case he accidentally rolled over in his sleep and put his arm on my tummy, but it never happened and I think I slept better knowing I could reach out and touch him whenever I needed to. Does that make sense? I suppose too it depends on how big your bed is? We have a queen and seemed to have plenty of room for all the extra pillows. See how it goes at first and if you are in too much pain I'm sure he would do anything to help you.
