Morphine Question??
Does everyone no matter what type surgery they get, do you have the pump for pain meds and is it morphine? The reason I ask is that when I was 18 I had a bad car accident and the pain meds made me sick I can't tell you if it was morphine I can't remember. I have a BIG fear of getting sick after the surgery. When I had shingles a did good on vicadon. I'm having a lavh with removal of overies. Will the pain be bad enough for morphine? Doesn't also make you itch? Sorry I am getting a little nervous 19 days to go and it realy is feeling more real the closer it gets. I read a lot about getting emotional and crying my problem is my evil twin comes out everything annoys me. I know the waiting is the worst part, I just need to calm down.

Re: Morphine Question??
You need to tell your doctor and the hospital when you do your pre-op to NOT give you Morphine. It is that simple.
I have an intolerance to a lot of things and my biggest thing is pain medications. They make me sick. Pain pills are the worst for me. When I told the GYN that I had an intolerance to pain killers he immediately asked if I could tolerate things other than Morphine.
There are other things that they can give you in the drip. I cannot tolerate a Demerol shot, but I can handle it in a slow drip as my last c-section showed.
I told him that my biggest fear was the pain and not being able to manage it as the tears started rolling down my face. Really we won't know what to do with the pain until I get there and see how I react to the different drips they have. He said he would give me orders for one and then have another in standby to switch to if needed. He also would give standing orders to up all pain meds to a certain level but starting me off lower doses (I do have a high pain tolerance) to see where my drug tolerance level is.
Incidentally, I have problems with anesthesia as well. *sigh* I spoke with the anesthesiologist when I registered at the hospital. They noted on my charts that I have problems and what problems I have. I will speak to the one that is on-call for the surgery that morning before ever being taken back even if we're waiting for him to show up. I get my discussion with him before anything else happens.
For this YOU are your best advocate! You should be marked NO MORPHINE! There are other things that YOU can have. SPEAK UP!

Re: Morphine Question??
If you're not actually sure it was morphine, I'd relay the experience but if it's the nausea experience you fear, it can happen with anything. But they do have good meds now to prevent nausea, be sure to tell the anesthesiologist that is your fear. I never had a pain pump and they transitioned me from IV meds given by the nurses, to Percocet as soon as they could. Keep in mind that often it's the anesthesia alone that can cause nausea so they give sometimes 2 or 3 anti nausea meds before you even wake up. If you aren't sure which drug you actually took then I wouldn't necessarily make it an absolute to rule one out. You might want to discuss Toradol with your Dr, too, it's not a narcotic. And some people can itch with narcs, I never did. If you discuss your concerns with your Dr and anesthesiologist and nurses, they should be able to keep you from getting sick but still have good pain control. Best wishes for a good experience.

Re: Morphine Question??
My doctor discussed pain meds with me during the preop. Vicodin makes me vomit (he said that is common with pain meds). I know I do well with morphine. He said that has to be given with an IV, and he wanted me to take the pain meds orally because I could not take an IV home with me. He wanted the pain managed before I left the hospital and did not want me to switch pain management methods upon returning home. I have done well with tylenol 3+ codeine, so that is what I got. It worked beautifully.
I'd suggest a frank discussion with the doc about your fears so you can have an agreed upon plan in place.
BTW I had a laparoscopic surgery and was only in the hospital for 12.5 hours.

Re: Morphine Question??
I have a history of bad reactions to anesthesia, tell them at the pre-op about your fears and they will plan accordingly. I was given an anti nausea med in my IV so that I wasn't 'sick' when I woke up. Morphine and the like are not necessary either, it you don't want them!! I had a total hyst and came through it on tylenol.

Re: Morphine Question??
Ok now I'm wondering about something. I think I'm allergic to codeine. I had a bunch of surgeries/health problems when I was a kid, so when I was about three my mom taught me the littany of drugs they'd discovered I was allergic to and one of those was codeine.
I'm not sure what my reaction was to it and I've never been allergy tested for it. I asked my mom and she said, "I think you got hives. And asthma. You were allergic to so many things I can't remember what all the reactions were."
So if I *AM* allergic to codeine, would morphine be a bad idea?

Re: Morphine Question??
You can be allergic to one narcotic but OK with another. Tell them your history and what you know and they can know you are a possible reacter but lots of people are OK with one, bad with another. Always best to alert your medical team to your history so they can make an appropriate plan.

Re: Morphine Question??
Definitely discuss your concerns with your Dr. and again when you're getting ready to go into the OR. I had my TVH done with an epidural and just a little bit of anesthetic so I don't remember a thing about the surgery.
The epidural was left in for pain relief for the first day & 1/2, then removed, & by then, I was able to just use Extra Strength Tylenol. It worked really well for me & eliminated the need to narcotic pain relievers.

Re: Morphine Question??
I was concerned about nausea and vomiting with morphine-but the answer is quite simple. Just ask them to give you an anti- nausea medication after you come out of surgery. I did and I was fine-no nausea or vomiting at all. Believe me -you will be very glad of the pain relief that you get from morphine-you will need it for a little while after surgery.
