Upcoming surgery questions
Has anyone needed to have a hysterecomy due to fibroids pressing on their ureters? My uterus is also tilted toward the back with two fibroids. One is twisting my uterus on the right side. I was wondering if anyone else had the same symptoms. Thank goodness for this website. My husband thinks I'm addicted to it. I'm always on it. Lurking around for information

No, but it seems to me that the real question is not whether to do something ( I would imagine that you have to do something!) But whether they can remove the fibroids via a myomectomy so that you can keep your uterus. There are at least two ways of myomectgomy that are pretty standard--open abdominal and hysteroscopic. I have no idea if you can do a hysteroscopic on the location of your fibroid--it would have to be jutting into the uterus so if these are on the outside I think it woudl'[t work. But if youwant to keep your uterus I would check out the possibility of a regular myomectomy. And there are some new approaches (?robotic laparascopic?) that i just read about.

Upcoming surgery questions
I'm having a hysterectomy due to an enlarged uterus ( uterus is size of 20 week pregnancy) with fibroids. I have at least 3 fibroids. Due to the enlarged uterus, it is pushing on my bladder and I feel like I know what it's like to be pregnant with a baby sitting on your bladder at times. My surgery is March 20th.

Just when I think "how did I not notice my enlarged uterus is the size of a 14 week pregnancy?" you say yours is the size of a 20 week pregnancy. OK, so can you imagine how great we're going to feel with the fibroids are removed? Wow! Awesome. I've had the "jumpy" legs syndrome for about a year now, although it's fine once I lie down, and so I'm wondering if maybe this is caused by the fibroids smashing up against some of my nerves that run down the legs. Hmmmm. I'm noticing lots of cramps and back aches that I just brushed off before. My surgery is scheduled for March 25th. My doc said I have numerous fibroids that are larger than tennis balls, but smaller than watermelons. Oh my! Kind of a strange feeling having all that in the belly, isn't it? Can't wait for the relief. Mind and body.

Upcoming surgery questions
It is strange to think of something like a fibroid growing inside us. I don't know the size of mine, but am ready to be rid of them. Actually, I went for my yearly exam in Jan and asked my doctor about having an ablation to put an end to all these heavy periods. I just can't take it any more. I feel so horrible when I'm on my periods....have to stay close to the bathroom...and that is when i feel like I'm down in my back some months. I had no idea till he did my exam that my uterus was even enalarged. I went back for another procedure and that is when he told me it was due to the fibroids. He plans to do the robotic laproscopic hyster just removing my uterus...or that is the plan for now. Hope he doesn't find any other problems once he begins. March 20th and counting!!!! He seems to think it will be a short recovery period. My iron has been low and feeling very tired. I'm taking my iron twice a day to get all ready for the big day! I can hardly wait to feel like a new woman!! woo hoo!!!!

My internist referred me to a new gynecologist; I hadn't found a new one since I moved 6 or 7 years ago. Egads, I never should have waited so long. I knew I had fibroids, but had no idea they had stretched my uterus to 14 weeks pregnant size. I was shocked to put it mildly. I whined and pleaded to try a less invasive method than TAH, but he said no can do with such giganticus fibroids. They are causing me lots of symptoms, so I am ready and willing to be rid of them now. Unfortunately need to wait another 3 weeks. Darn.
Best of luck on the robotic laproscopic. Sounds like a really good plan for you. Not too much longer. Just think--we can have a party to throw out all the kotex soon! Yippee!

My uterus was 15 weeks (one fibroid alone was the size of a 2nd uterus), and causing episodes of urinary retention, esp. during my period. I was lucky that I got to the point where I could self-cath without looking, but didn't want to do it for 7 more years. I had a TAH in December, and so far it's been a textbook recovery.
Consider that when you consent to surgery, the path can change at any time, so what starts as an lapro can change to a TAH if deemed necessary. There were no plans to take my ovaries, and yes I kept them, but the paperwork also stated that the surgeon could remove them if necessary. Some folks on here will recommend 2nd and 3rd opinions on whether you can have lapro, but if you trust your doctor, then that's the most important factor. I trusted mine, and she came through with flying colors! But if you don't, then yes, I'd suggest talking to some others.
Good luck!

My surgery was also due to fibroids. My uterus was approx 16 wks in size. Surgery was suggested 5 years ago but I wasn't ready for it mentally until this year. Once my doctor opened me up he found I had extensive endo. I'll have to ask him if my retroverted and twisted uterus was due more the fibroids or endo.
I can tell you that even just two weeks out I can clearly feel a difference. My back pain is gone, and I feel "free" inside. I never even realized that I felt any discomfort because it came on so slowly and I just got used to it.
My largest fibroids were pressing on my bladder, my back, and my cervix. I had a family of smaller fibroids within my uterus.
I'm really glad I went through with the surgery. Because of a seriously strong family history of heart attack and stroke many of the options to try and shrink my fibroids weren't available to me and ablation didn't seem like it would last long enough. Given that I'm 45 and know I'm not having children I think the surgery was the absolute best decision for me.
