So afraid: Mass found, hysterectomy recommended, need advice on ovaries
I am scheduled for surgery on May 1.
I am a mess, still can't accept any of this! They found a mass on a routine pet scan ( future cancer survivor) in my uterus , the dr's never suggested any other testing to determine if it was in fact Cancer . I do have fibroids but have no symptoms and never suffered from them at all.. I went for three opinions and they all recommended hysterectomy. No one is sure if it is cancer or not. I am so upset..
I will be able to save my ovaries if it isn't cancer, I am confused, do I keep them? Is it cancer? I'm afraid of the surgical menopause, I am very athletic(fit), anxious and a single mom who has to keep it together. I have no thyroid and rely on a pill to keep me going,I'm sure that is gonna play a role in this as well....
Im sorry if I'm making no sense here,i am all over the place. I would really appreciate some advice on no nothing..
Do I keep my ovaries if it isn't cancer? Will it make a difference? Do I go on hrt if I can? Will I age drastically and never feel the same again due to menopause? (All I hear from people are horror stories, I would love some good ones)...

Re: Need advice...so afraid
I can totally relate to the freaking out part. I have been waiting for my surgery for almost 3 weeks now, and I was a MESS.. Mine is in the morning finally, and I am still a little nervous. First I would suggest that you make peace with A decision. If all the Dr's think it is in your best interest to have a hysterectomy, then maybe it is exactly what you need. I am concerned over the surgical menopause too, But I have been educating myself during my wait. I finally had to just Breathe and Let the Excessive worrying go!! I am at peace w/ my decision and will deal with whatever comes after, I hope you have a good support system. It means everything to have that.I wish you all the best. Remember to breathe.. We are all going through the same nerves I promise and from what I have heard from everyone else, it is the waiting that is the worst, Only advice I can give is dont get to internet happy looking things up. You tend to find more horror stories than good stories, b/c most ppl who are doing well do not post. Everything you need is on this site. There are some caring and beautiful ladies on this site. Pray all goes well for you.

Re: Need advice...so afraid
I am surprised that they didn't do a CT scan or MRI to see what it exactly was. My doc scheduled an MRI right away after seeing the US to look at the tumor to see if it was cancerous. 98% not but could still be borderline when they looked at the results.. It made me feel more at ease at that point.
Good luck on your surgery!

Hey honey! I'm so sorry for what's going on with you! It can be so frustrating to deal with this intrusion into your life. It's hard to give up so much control to the Dr., to not understand exactly what's going on or what will happen, and if you're like me you tried to look up studies online and ran into mixed reviews on everything. I'm still almost a month out and I'm so glad I found this place!
For comfort turn here, there are so many resources read read read people's pre-op questions pre-op suggestions, post surgery success stories and so on. DON'T wander into sections that discusses problems that you don't have. No reason to worry about problems that aren't here. Reading horror stories does you no good, most people do just fine I promise. In fact since telling my congregation about this I discovered that 3 of my friends have had a hysterectomy in the past before I met them and you'd never know it. As a warning people have no idea how to react when you tell them so try hard not to let them freak you out. I've actually been laughing about some of the reactions. I figure the only thing I truly have control of is my reactions.
As for your questions about your ovaries what does your Dr say? If the fibroid is precancerous or even cancerous it is encased in your uterus. It seems that would have nothing to do with your ovaries. If you have trouble asking the Dr questions or getting straight answers see if you can email them your question. That way you can get it just right and have the answers in writing. If they do need to take your ovaries there are hormone therapies.I know that sucks, but at least it's available.
I know you can handle this! Get the information you need, control what you can physically, let yourself feel whatever emotions you need to, and hang on for dear life cause it can be a roller coaster. Take care of yourself! We'll talk to you soon!

Re: Need advice...so afraid
I was a nervous wreck for 3weeks up until april1. My fear was that I would die during surgery and that I would be less of a woman without all of my female parts. I can tell you it was no way near what I prepared for😏 the hospital staff was great. The only problem
I really have is GAS😔. I take gas x for that. Make sure you get up and walk around as soon as you can IT HELPS. Also stool softeners ARE YOUR FRIEND! Good luck sending BIG HUGS to all of you about to come over to the other side with me.

Re: Need advice...so afraid
Thank you for all your kind wishes .. I truly appreciate it..
The doctors never ordered a MRI or anything else.. I tried and went to three doctors hoping one would recommend another test.. They were all just for used on getting a hysterectomy... I think it has something to do w the suv being 8.5 on the pet scan..
I'm so glad I found this site... I will be posting many more questions before surgery, I'm so grateful I can count on honest answers and advice here...
Thank you all..xo

Re: So afraid: Mass found, hysterectomy recommended, need advice on ovaries
Hi Lcrepap98 -
I had a mass that was found during my annual exam. I also had no symptoms, and did not know it was there. They did an ultrasound which showed a very large complex ovarian cyst (12 x 9 x 11 cm). They also did an MRI because they could not find the origination of the mass. There was also a cancer concern with me, and an gyn onc did my surgery. All was tested in the OR and all was benign.
I know it is scary having something unknown growing inside of you. And many times they cannot tell if it is cancer or not until they do the surgery. So, I understand the . Are you having a gyn onc do your surgery? Or have you spoken to one?
Whether or not you keep your ovaries should be a discussion with your doctor. I did not have a choice, but would have kept mine if I could have. I am now on HRT because surgical menopause was MISERABLE. My GP put me on oral estrogen, and it gave me my life back. I do not think I have aged drastically since, just the normal aging that happens over the years.
All of your emotions are very normal. This is one tough surgery to process and digest. And to have cancer concerns running around in the middle of this makes it that much worse.
We understand what you are going through and are here to help and support you.
