Atypical glandular cells of unknown significance

Good afternoon.
Has anyone had experience with the AGCUS Pap results? I'd be interested in hearing what they turned out to be. My google research indicates it's a fairly rare finding (less than 1 percent of Paps) and has a fairly high incident of precancerous or cancerous origin.
I've already had a colposcopy but my cervix is too narrow to allow a good biopsy without a D & C and because of my history (prior cone, LEEP and atypical paps), I believe the hysterectomy is the best option to avoid a never-ending series of surgeries and biopsies.
I'm just interested in knowing if any of the real princesses who already know their outcomes have any thoughts.

Atypical glandular cells of unknown significance

Hello there!

My annual Pap the year before my diagnosis/surgery showed AGCUS. The follow-up Pap was normal, so we didn't do any other testing, etc. I didn't have a history of abnormal Paps.

The next annual Pap again showed AGCUS. So did that follow-up Pap. The colposcopy (my first!) results came back as adenocarcinoma of the cervix (which is also supposed to be "rare"). I was immediately (and wisely!) referred to a gyno-onco, and we did the radical hysterectomy. Fortunately, it was very early, and the surgery was the only treatment for me.

Now, I didn't share this information to scare you. You can read enough stuff on the net for that! I just wanted to share my personal experience. The good news is that it may "correct" itself (so to speak) in your next Pap. The even better news is that even if it doesn't, you've most likely caught things fairly early when treatment is very successful.

My guess is you'll do a follow-up Pap before anything else. If that also comes back AGCUS, you might be well advised to seek the opinion of a gyno-onco. They are the experts, after all. Just be sure to stay on top of things. Your health is THE most important thing you have!

Here's hoping for negative results!

I had a series of paps with ASCUS and AGUS for years. Then I switched docs and had my first colpo and cone biopsy. Showed I had HPV with pre cancerous concerns, cone biopsy had clear margins.

I read that your cervix is narrowed from biopsies, etc. Mine was completely scarred shut due to an aggressive cone biopsy. I had the hyst for two reasons...the pre cancerous findings but more importantly because with a scarred shut cervix, your menses cannot get out and I would have become very sick. I was not a candidate for continual bcp to stop my period.

So, Agus is rare and is usually a sign to investigate further.

Keep us posted.
