Bending during recovery
What type of surgery did you have, or does that matter? I know there are different types of hysterectomy surgeries, and I'm curious if this restriction if for one or all of them.

Re: Bending during recovery
It's a hard one. I think it's generally good advice for all surgery types - you don't want to strain your internal stitches - and there are a lot.
I tried to not bend, but old habits die hard and bending over to scoop up my cat happened a few times without thinking. The, "Oh Crap! I shouldn't have done that." moment. I didn't have much pain and I don't think the occasional oops caused me any problems, but I did try to play it safe. It's hard when you aren't hurting to remember to take it easy.

Re: Bending during recovery
I'm having a TAH on 2.3.12 and was told TAKE it EASY for weeks on in...Which is going to be the hardest thing for a person with OCD to do! But....I will be sure to TRY at least.

Re: Bending during recovery
I may be 64 but I am a very active 64, and under normal circumstances can't stay still for long. I had TAH BSO on 1-10-12 and have had to make myself be careful and also just sit and rest even when I don't feel really tired. I do walk short distances and do light things around the house, but I am playing it safe, too much at stake. I really do miss not being able to bend down or get on the floor with my dog, though, lol! Good luck to all my pre op and recovering Hyster Sisters!

Re: Bending during recovery
I had a LAVH and I was told upon discharge NO BENDING OR LIFTING of anything over 5lbs. I could bend after 2 weeks but the no lifting continued until my 7 week post op appointment. Get yourself one of those grabbers so the temptation to bend is not so strong.

Re: Bending during recovery
Take it easy or you will end up back in the surgery room is what I have heard. My children asked what it felt like when I bent over because I told them I couldn't. The best way I thought of is it felt like I had 2 balls in the abdomen when I bent over. It is very uncomfortable. When I do feel well I do light things around the house but only a few. You may look and feel great but you can't see whats going on on the inside and that is where the healing is taking place. Its worth it to be a princess for 6 weeks or so, enjoy it while you can!

Re: Bending during recovery
I had lap surgery. I was told not to bend until I felt I could. The first week I couldn't do it. After that I could do it slowly and carefully. About week 3 it wasn't a problem.
No matter what kind of surgery you have watch your weight limits. Even though mine was 10 lbs I couldn't pick up more than a pound or two the first few days. Gradually I was able to do more. I'm at 8 weeks and still max at about 15 lbs. Before surgery I could do 50 lbs with no problems.
I took the drs. restrictions as the most I could do. I listen to my body. When my body says to put something down, I do. When it says to sit down, I do. Today it's saying I did too much yesterday (first good cleaning since I had surgery). So I'm having DH move some stuff so I can finish vacuuming (he can't vacuum as thoroughly as I do). Then I'll probably plop myself in bed and do some homework and work a bit on taxes if my 1099 came in the mail. Oh, and read the Sunday paper and clip coupons. Yup, heavy day today.

Re: Bending during recovery
You stated it perfectly, the reasons to be so careful for weeks to months after surgery!

Re: Bending during recovery
My DR is very conservative. She said no bending, squatting or lifting over 5lbs. Surely, she is too rigid I thought. Nope! Bending was quite uncomfortable plus it's not condusive to healing suture sites. I did learn how to kneel slowly after a week or so. Take post op orders to heart and listen to your body. It seems like you'll be a bedridden invalid who can do nothing. Not true. You will acclimate to the differing situations and get by. It takes time. Good luck : )
