how much is enough iron pre-op
I'm having a TAH, leaving RT ovary, a bowel resection and rectocele repaired on Mar. 12th. The doctor has told me to take one iron pill (300 mg) once or twice a day. Starting 1 or 2 months before surgery. This is to minimize the risk of transfusion.
It is suggested that I drink prune juice or take 2 Senokot tablets, twice a day.
Well, I have never tolerated iron pills...I could not take them during either of my pregnancies. I have had a problem with severe constipation since I was a child.....I also have food allergies so things like bran and metemucil are out of the question for me. Iron constipates me badly. I have an irritibal bowel....as soon as I take something like a stool softener or laxative I go from one extreme to the next. I tried the 300 mg of iron for several days...I also tried the senokot, prunes, pear juice but all these things combined gave me stomach pains and gas. Because of the extensive surgery I may require I'm worried about NOT taking the iron but it's hurting my overall health now....at a time where I'm trying to get physically and emotionally in shape for this surgery.
Has anyone had this problem...or any input on Iron intake prior to surgery.
Thanks so much.
Best to you all. Trish

how much is enough iron pre-op
Hi,
I was taking iron twice a day for about a month leading up to my surgery due to anemia. My blood count was 11.5 the morning of surgery and dropped to 8 after surgery.
Taking the iron mostly gave me gas.
I also found that cream of wheat is an excellent source of iron, just in case your system can't tolerate the iron tablets. The American Red Cross also told me to eat foods rich in Vitamin C to help your body absorb the iron.
I hope this helps.
Best Wishes for a complication-free surgery and for a healthy recovery.
God Bless You !

Getting enough iron
For one thing, you might talk to your doctor again and ask him if he has anything besides iron pills to suggest. There are products available in health food stores that add iron to your diet in more natural ways and aren't constipating for most people. You can eat liver a couple of times a week. The iron from meat is easily absorbable. And don't forget the dark green veggies!
Hope things go well for you,
Joselle

Had similar problems as my blood count was 9 post op. Had to give up on iron as it was just too painful, tried the laxative route but just swung from painful constipation to painful diarrhea.
Sorry can't be of more help other than to suggest that you have plenty of vit.c with either tabs or iron rich food as it helps get the maximum absorbtion.

You need to call your DR's office today and tell them that you are having a problem with the iron, so they can help you.
Do read food labels and choose foods that have a high iron content, liver, red meats, dark green leafy veggies, iron fortified cereal, etc, but also discuss this when you call your DR's office (today remember ).
I was quite anemic before surgery, I had to take an iron supplement (150mg) 3x/day, or 450mg/day. My DR told me to take each pill with a glass of orange juice (NOT pulp free) for two reasons: the vit c aids in the absorption of the iron, and the pulp adds fiber and helps with constipation. I don't have any of the bowel problems you have, but I have always been kind of slow to go, not really constipated just slow. I was the most regular I have ever been in my life when I was taking the iron and drinking the oj.
So call the office and find out what they suggest for you, and let us know what they tell you!
Best wishes

Another chick who iron pills hate
and I went the health food store route with this, lots of supps out there and if my brain wasn't so foggy, I will tell you what I took long ago. Better for you to research it for yourself I suppose.
I couldn't tolerate pre-natal vitamins or iron in an pill form, but during my trying to conceive years, had to be on this just in case we got lucky. I did some health food supplements, ate liver once a week, lots of green veggies and prunes. One eight ounce glass of prune juice has 10% of your RDA. My hemocrits were just fine with the herbal/diet thing and I did several surgeries and had heavy periods during this time frame too.
My granny and my mom introduced me to liver as a teenager, basically was told now that you have a period, you eat this once a week and I really didn't mind. I love a big plate of liver and onions with a side of steamed spinach and mashed taters. I know many of the readers of this post are saying EWWWW! right now, DH tells me if I am going to cook that nasty ****, do it at lunch while he is at work, and the dawg and I enjoy our weekly liver luncheon.

how much is enough iron pre-op
Hi Trish, I've always had problems taking iron. It always made me very constipated and extremely nauseous. My dr told me to try a slow release iron tablet (got them at wal Mart). I've been taking them for several months now. The only problem I have with them is a little gas sometimes.
I think you should call your dr and ask if maybe that or a iron rich food could help you.
Lots of luck s
