Upcoming Hysterectomy (6/26) for cervical dysplasia

Hi there,

I'm wondering if anyone has been in the same situation as me?

I'm scheduled to have a total hysterectomy plus fallopian tubes (but keeping ovaries) on the 26th of June.

I'm 40 years of age and 2.5 years ago CIN3 was picked up on a regular pap smear. I had LLETZ/LEEP procedure to remove it all. Then at my 6 months review colposcopy it showed low grade changes. My oncologist recommended waiting to see if it cleared and six months after that, I had another colposcopy and CIN2 had come back. I had another LLETZ/LEEP to remove it all. At the six month review after that one it showed CIN1 and I was positive to HPV 16. Waited another 6 months and it's just been confirmed I still have active HPV 16 and its CIN3 again.

In the meantime I have randomly grown a 11cm fibroid that is causing issues.

The oncologist recommended a hysterectomy rather than a myectomy and another LLETZ/LEEP mainly because of the persistent cervical dysplasia and aggressive type of HPV 16. She doesn't want to risk it progressing to cancer and the chances it will randomly go away now are very slim.

Has anyone else been in this situation? I'm very confident in my doctor as she's the top of her field but I feel funny emotionally because I don't need to have a hyster to stop symptoms so there is no real upside for me to look forward to. It's just to avoid cancer but I don't (thankfully!) have cancer now so I feel like I fall between the cracks of a lot of the information that says hyster as last resort except for cancer. But then i don't actually have cancer.

Sorry for the waffle but I'm feeling very overwhelmed by it all.

Thanks for reading,
P

Re: Hysterectomy for cervical dysplasia

I am in a similar situation. CIN3 / HPV here as well. My hysterectomy is scheduled for Wednesday June 7. After the Colposcpy, a LEEP was suggested, I am 39, with an 18 year old son, my step children are 14 and 16. Before my husband and I married a year ago, we had decided no more children. I advised my doctor of this and expressed my desire to skip all the procedure, after procedure, after procedure foolishness, in an effort to preserve my fertility. He agreed and scheduled me.
People keep telling me how much better I will feel after the surgery, but like you, I don't have any negative symptoms, I am just taking steps to avoid cancer from forming.
