LAVH on 9/2 I'm scared

I am 29 years old. My hysterectomy is scheduled for 9/2/09-6 days away. I've tried all alternate measures to resolve my medical concerns, but to no avail. I can't stop thinking about the procedure and shake the what is's. You know, what if there's too much blood loss or anesthesia reactions, or some other catastrophy. The surgery will be performed at the hospital I work in, I trust the staff completely, but it's done little to alleviate my fears. I can't sleep, and get scared to the point of tears when I think about it. I get to the point where I would rather cancel the procedure, but then I have to take another pain medication and am reminded why this is necessary. Are these feelings normal? I feel that I am over reacting, and should accept it. I've vonducted a lot of research, and the statistics are favorable, but still it's very, very frightening!

Re: LAVH on 9/2 I'm scared

I think these feelings are pretty normal for a lot of women. It is definitely frightening. I haven't had any of the bad anxiety because I've been in pain for so long and so bad that anything is better than this, however, my doctor asked me if I was stressing about it and said if I am he would give me a few xanax to help with that because I can't afford for my blood pressure to go up. I declined, but if you think something like that might help maybe you could call your doctor and tell them what you're feeling and see what they say. I'm sure they wouldn't want you to be sleep deprived and completely stressed out when you go in for the surgery. Best of luck to you

Re: LAVH on 9/2 I'm scared

I think it's perfectly normal to be afraid. You are going through a major surgery that is going to take time to recover from and the decision may touch a lot of areas of your life. It took me a very long time before I could approach the decision to have a hyst.

The goal is to wake up from the surgery with many decades of GI pain-free days ahead of you. I had my surgery on Monday. I'm feeling kind of grumpy right now, but I can tell you that from the moment I woke up I knew I had made the right decision. The pain I had lived with for years was gone.

Sending up good thoughts and prayers for you.

Younghyst
Hi there.
Reading your post, I saw myself and I haven't even got my surgery date -- it could be months away. These feelings are normal. You are not overreacting. We all know that it is easier said than done to relax.
Best wishes for a speedy recovery
Hugs,
Suzanne

Your feelings are perfectly normal. I was driving myself crazy worrying too before my surgery. All I can say is I had an uneventful recovery & am doing fine now. It can all just go well & I hope that will be the case for you too.
