4 days post hysterectomy: When should I expect to have bowel movement and not so much gas?

My surgery was Wed 3/11. I had an abdominal hysterectomy. I have yet to have a bowel movement, but I have plenty of gas that REALLY hurts. The gas moving in my stomach will make me stop dead in my tracks it hurts so bad. I have taken a stool softner since everyday since the day after my surgery. I know the pain medicine may cause constipation, but I am not using it as much as I was while in the hospital. Should I be doing something else?

I had my first bowel movement 4 days after my hysterectomy. I took Colace for a day and a half before it started working. I was taking one at a time but when I started taking two at a time, that's when it started working lol. I had 4 bowel movements in one day!! It wasn't urgent or painful and it felt so much better afterward. Hope you feel better soon!!

Hi, I ate prunes. Cook dried prunes with water to top and add slices of lemon. Let boil till juice thickens a bit. Eat three a day and things will be moving real soon. The lemon gives it a good taste and it's not so sweet. If you don't like it, drink orange juice in the morning. Drink lots of water and walk everyday. Hope these tricks help!

I had my TLAVH on 3/11 and had my first BM yesterday 3/14. I had been taking Percocet around the clock prior to surgery due to all the pain I was having. I started with Colace, but switched to Senna S due to all the gas I was getting from the Colace.
After my surgery I found it easier to pass gas by sitting on the toilet and let gravity do the work this seems to work with BM's as well. I also drink tons of water and walk as much as I'm able.

You might try Gas-x for the gas pains if you haven't tried it. I've seen others suggest drinking Smooth Move Tea to help with the BM. Below are links to a couple articles

Stool softener 2x a day, water, Gas X (I use the strips that dissolve on your tounge), water, water...did I mention water? Hope you are able to have some relief soon.

I used Colace for soft stools, but gas x didn't help me. I found that drinking 1Tbs apple cider vinegar (Bragg's) in 12 oz of water stopped those sharp rolling gas pains right away and I soon had my first BM. I've continued the drinking vinegar mixture (3 Tbs throughout the day in the beginning, now just 1), and the gas pains never came back and my swelly belly quickly went away, too.
