Re: Birth control pills making bleeding worse
I tried 3 different sorts of birth control pills. The first one was Alesse, a very low dose pill, and while it made my periods regular I still bled a lot when they arrived, and they still were longer than they should be (7-10 days). I also found I was feeling a bit low, but it was hard to say whether that was the pills. Because the flow was still heavy I tried another pill, Portia. This made me feel better (no low feeling) but I had the same problems during my period - very heavy bleeding, flooding, clots. It was frustrating to be taking medication with little effect. So we tried another pill (I tried each one of these for about 3 months), this time Minestrin. I only lasted a month on this one - I bled the whole month, and ended up with anemia. So I went back to the Portia, only now I took it continuously, so no period at all. This was great for about 3-4 months until I started spotting occasionally, and then ended up spotting all the time, sometimes needing to use a tampon. Sure it was less bleeding, but it definitely wasn't right. That was when the fibroids were found and 4 months later I had a hysterectomy. No more bleeding

Re: Birth control pills making bleeding worse
My previous pill was, I believe, a lower dose, whereas my current one is a normal dose. Thankfully, I learned that the insurance plan I chose under Medicaid actually allows me to have cheap brand name prescriptions, which means I could easily go back to Ortho Tri Cyclen Lo and afford it.
This headache could also possibly be the beginnings of a sinus infection. I usually get at least one a year and my only symptom is a godawful, splitting headache that drives me to tears and does not respond at all to painkillers or home remedies. My current headache isn't at that point yet, but it's kind of centered around the area between my eyes where sinus headaches start brewing. I'll wait it out for the rest of the month and see if I don't feel better during the placebo week. The shooting pains are totally new for me, though.
And I did consider the possibility of a fibroid given my symptoms, but my doctor said everything felt normal during my pelvic exam. I suppose it's possible that I could have a fibroid that was too small to feel, but wouldn't it at least cause my uterus to be larger, or cause some kind of difference that a doctor could detect externally? My gyno never even suggested that my bleeding could be due to anything other than my thyroid disease.

Re: Birth control pills making bleeding worse
Hey OuchDownSouth!
Have you gotten anything other than a physical exam of your pelvis area? My fibroids are huge right now, but they were originally "found" with an ultrasounds (both internal and external). Depending on where they are in your uterus, I'm not really sure if something that can be felt.

Re: Birth control pills making bleeding worse
I have not gotten an ultrasound in about 2 years. I got one of my ovaries back in 2013 when my gyno wanted to rule out ovarian cysts, but she's got no reason to order one for me now. Thankfully, my periods are a little more bearable after going through my second packet of pills - it wasn't nearly as heavy or painful as last month, but already it's starting to show signs of irregularity even with the pills. During the first packet, my period was insanely heavy, but it started pretty much on the very first placebo pill day. During the second packet, my period didn't start until the fifth placebo pill and it's currently still flowing in spite of my being three days into my third packet.
I'm hoping things will stabilize as I remain on these pills longer, but since I now have insurance, I may be able to go back to Ortho Tri Cyclen Lo.
Also, I got my Meluna cup and, when it works, I love it! I can wear it for hours at a time and all night, but I still have times when I can't quite get it to work right and it'll leak. These cups need to be folded prior to insertion, but in my case, sometimes the cup won't unfold once it's inside, and then I have to play with it for 20 minutes and try to place it properly. The folding methods that make for the most comfortable insertion are the ones that are also the least likely to unfold, and it does kind of hurt to put it in at times because of all this folding nonsense. It's not something I'd trust enough to wear outside the house just because of how long it takes me to get it placed correctly, if I can get it into proper position at all.

Re: Birth control pills making bleeding worse
I'm so glad to hear that your periods are a bit more bearable. Fingers crossed for you that it continues!
I had the same problem with menstrual cups not completely unfolding after insertion. It becomes easier over time to "fiddle" with it. When I first started using it, I sometimes got so frustrated and late for work that I just switched back to pads for the day. Even recently, I would also only use them at home because they fill up so quickly and I didn't want to deal with emptying, cleaning and re-inserting them in public or at work. At least it gives your skin a break from pads and tampons when you're at home.

Re: Birth control pills making bleeding worse
My fibroids were never found by pelvic exams, it was only when I had an ultrasound that they were discovered.
When I was on pills the best one I tried decreased the bleeding for a month or two and then it got worse again. I got all the heavy bleeding symptoms with no obvious swelling or bulking, and I'm a slim woman! When my doctor was trying to find out the reason for the bleeding he never once said fibroids to me... it was only after about a year of no luck with pills that he sent me to get an ultrasound.
