What happens in pre-ops?

I'm scheduled for TVH July 3. (fibroids, excessive bleeding/clots)

I have 2 pre-op appointments, one with my doc at her office and a few days later I have one at the hospital.

So what is being done at each appointment? Is one a "talk" appointment maybe? What do they do at the hospital pre-op?

What happens in pre-ops?

Carol - Everyone's pre-ops are a little different. I only had one at the hospital...they took blood...I signed forms they gave me instructions on what to do the night before...and where to come the day of surgery. That was it.

I'm sure some others will be along shortly to share their experiences.

What happens in pre-ops?

Hi Carol,

I had a pre-op at the hospital. They went over paperwork, checking coverage, finding out who's respronsible, etc. My hospital insists on Medical Directives so they told me to bring in a copy of mine. If I didn't have one, they would have provided one for me. I spent some time in an office with a nurse who went over some things re the surgery. They also have someone from anesthesiology and I talked to him for a while.

Had blood drawn, pee'd in the cup, vitals taken, and an EKG which is required for women over 45 or 50, not sure. They were very efficient and I was out of there within 1 1/2 hrs.

I didn't have one with my dr. I do know that this is the time for you to have all your questions ready for him. I'm sure others will be along to tell you about their pre-op with the dr.

Good Luck

What happens in pre-ops?

Carol,
One visit was "talk", what to expect the day of surgery, and when you return home.
Other visit was to get blood work taken care of.
Hospital called day before surgery for detailed instructions (IE:
don't drink/eat/smoke anything after midnight, don't wear makeup, nail polish, etc.)

Pre-Op??????????

Hi Carol. I am scheduled for TAH on June 19, 2001, but have had a lot of surgeries. Most pre-ops are similar. I have to go to the Drs. office first for consult, and to sign papers. A few minutes later it's next door to the hospital for blood work, urine sample, insurance info... and instructions on where and what time to report, oh and no eating or drinking after midnight.
Yours will probably be the same. If not the same... just a "little" different.
Mine are alway's the day before.
" Good Luck"

What happens in pre-ops?

I had two pre-ops too. One was with the surgeon - a chance to ask questions and the other was for blood tests and pee in the cup. I didn't have to have an EKG. When I eventually have this thing done, I sign all the paper work the morning of surgery.

Gosh - with postponing surgery - I hope I won't have to do another pre-op.

What happens in pre-ops?

Thanks for all the replies!
I am glad to learn that it's probably unlikely that I'll have to have another gyn exam.
I really hate those :-(
