Well, I thought I was doing great but after fighting a fever and chills, a cold, and a bizarre discharge finally went to the doctor. I have vaginal cuff cellulitis. The doc gave me a choice of going in the hospital for an IV or trying to take meds at home. The meds are making me so nauseated, I need to eat to take them but feel too crappy to eat. Does anyone have some suggestions? I can't even sleep which would be a nice vacation right now. I took pain meds last night and it helped me sleep but it took all day for the fog to lift. I should've just gone in the hospital and gotten it over with but I thought it'd be better to be home. If I'm not better by Monday the doc is putting me in anyway.

Hi spiceflower!
I am going through the exact same thing. I am aslo trying to beat this at home. I will say for the first 3-4 days I didn't feel much better. But then my fever resolved and although I was so fatigued I felt better without the fever. I was dissappointed then when my CT last Wed (exactly one week from diagnoses of problem) showed ongoing infection. So I was sent back home with strict orders to call immediately if my fever returned or I felt worse and then I would have to go to the hospital for IV also. I'm scheduled for a follow up CT on the 7th. In the meantime, today is the last day of my antibiotics so I'm nervous to see whether the problem gets worse or not! Also my Dr said if the CT showed no change, same thing, I have to go back to the hospital. The waiting is frustrating but I am happy to be in my own home.
As far as the antibiotics making your stomach sick I can definitely relate. I had to change them more than once for that reason. Maybe your Dr can work with you on that. It still is not perfect and digesting the barium from the CT didn't help either but I just force myself to eat. One thing I got that helps add protien is called Muscle Milk Light - it is like a chocolate milk that comes in little single serving boxes. It has 20 grams of protien and I get the light not for the low calorie but because it only has 3 grams of sugar. Taking all these antibiotics I'm trying to minimize sugar to help control yeast!!
While I can't offer you any solutions, I can defintley empathize!! I am praying for my issue to resolve and I'll add you to my prayers.
Hugs,
Starbgirl

I am so sorry to hear that this is happening to BOTH of you!
Spiceflower, maybe the doc could give you a good "knockout pill" to help you "sleep through" the misery at night. I took Temazepam to help me when I had trouble sleeping through my pain.
Hope you both get better soon and that you don't wind up back in the castle!

I don't feel much better today unfortunately. The pain pills help me sleep and get comfortable but I sure have a nasty hangover. I don't think my doc will give me the choice of continuing to fight it at home, changing meds etc., I think if she doesn't see good progress tomorrow I'm going back into the castle. I have to say that the commotion at home, the dh not being able to handle everything makes it so much harder to take care of myself consistently, and maybe the hospital stay would take care of it better. I don't know what to think right now. My fever seems to be abating for now, but still have the nasty discharge and pain seems to not be going away. I'm about to start taking my meds, force myself to eat, and try not to barf today!!!

As someone who actually had a pelvic abcess rupture three weeks after surgery, I suggest following all advice to a T. I spent six days in the ICU, had to have emergency surgery to get rid of the infection (and although I had no incisions from my hyster, I got three from this surgery, which was just three weeks after my hyster), I had 6 days of IV antibiotics and another 14 days of oral antibiotics -- the big guns -- Levaquin and Metronidazole (the ones they give you for Anthrax), which made me soooo ill. I too had to eat with each dose - 6:00 a.m., 2:00 p.m., 6:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. and had no appetite. All that eating made me gain weight too and added to my pharmacopic depression.
All that said, my heart goes out to you. You cannot worry whether or not your husband is making it either -- that's his issue. My husband complained after my hyster about feeling overworked (he's a stay-at-home dad, so this shouldn't have been that different for him), but after my third week in the hospital (had a pulmonary embolism in between my hyster and my abcess), which as I said, was spent in the ICU, it finally sank in that I might not actually survive this experience, and he suddenly turned around. I've now had six separate doctors tell me how lucky I am to be alive -- and that, really, completely changes your world.
Just worry about YOU. I know we all want to be matriarchal, and take care of everything and everyone, but it's not always possible. YOU are the one with the problems right now. Vaginal cuff cellulitis is nothing to mess around with -- it's terribly serious. If you need to go to the hospital, it's probably the best course for you. I will pray that your recovery goes well from this complication as well as your surgery and will hope that you can avoid further surgery too.
Stay strong, keep your chin up, and if you would, please keep us posted on your progress.
all my best,
Dina

Wow, thanks for your reply and check into reality! I'm doing everything the doctor said to, and tomorrow I'll see if it worked. I'm so sorry for what you've been through. But you're right, tonight when I was taking a bath I started thinking about what if it gets more complicated, what if I got really sick and all the worst case scenarios- and it does make you appreciate everything else when it's all in perspective. I had Levaquin once, nasty and made me barf like crazy- this Flagyl isn't too kind either. I'll keep yall posted. I hope you all get better soon!!!!
