Re: Do I want to keep my cervix or not?

I just had a supracervical hysterectomy with removal a fallopian tubes. I was very concerned about sexual side effects as I love sex. The issue I had with removing the cervix was that I would lose a little length in my vagina. The vagina is un even being slightly longer in the back because the cervix hangs down and there is a space behind the cervix. if you remove the cervix the two ends of the vagina get stitched up, the ends will be uneven thus causing you to loose a small amount of vagina length. When you orgasm, your uterus, cervix and vagina wall muscles contract. I was worried about this. I can tell you The big O is still the same for me...so glad I kept my cervix.
Take out whatever you NEED to. If you keep your cervix you may produce mucus, which is good so you experience less dryness...and you may spot. I am okay with all of this. I didnt want to risk tubal pregnacy so I had fallopian tubes removed.
I had my procedure done Da Vinci. If your doctor is telling you he can only do a supracervical by cutting you open, I would get a second opinion.Take care of yourself and dont be afriad to ask too many questions. It your body and your choice. Do not allow a doctor to do what he thinks you want. Do your research, you will be glad you did. google supracervical procedures... God bless

Re: what's a sling?

I'm guessing the cuff is the vagina? I don't know...

Re: Do I want to keep my cervix or not?

Thanks for all the great replies. This helps me soooo much!!!. I have been loosing sleep and cant seem to concentrate at work because of all this. I'm just so afraid I will regrete what ever decision I make. You see, I dont have endo or any major disorders. I do have a hx of eptopic pregnancies that damaged one of my tubes so I get occasional pain and very heavy irregular bleeding. I have 5 children and dont want anymore so my doctor recommended a TVH (but I changed it to a supra-cervical). My cervix is healthy and my paps are normal. The only bummer with the SVH is that I will have to have an open abdominal surgery so longer recovery. Oh, and the sling is for my bladder. I have stress incontinece (leak everytime I sneeze or cough) so the doctor thought it would be good to take care of everything at the same time.

Re: Do I want to keep my cervix or not?

Mysearch - isn't this a great place for information! Glad you received some help, good luck with the procedure!

915Tanya- you may want to post a separate question about vaginal cuffs - I'm a supracervical kinda girl myself, so I can't explain first hand. My understanding of the cuff is that it is the method of stitching the vaginal canal after the cervix has been removed.
