More comfortable being a caregiver.

I am scheduled for a TAH on 12/2/10. I have always been a caregiver and am very uncomfortable being taken care of. It's easy to say let it go and enjoy, but I truly don't enjoy the attention and having to need help. How long will I need someone close by? When will I be able to get around without help? Thanks.

Re: More comfortable being a caregiver.

I had my TAH a month ago and it took me almost two weeks to get around om my own. My hubby had to bring me my meals and help me get out of bed. After that, I could go up and down the stairs 1-2 times a day. Please let someone help you for as long as you need it. Best wishes!

Re: More comfortable being a caregiver.

I had a TAH vertical incision on the first of Nov. I was at the castle until friday but did lots of laps down the hall by myself, just go slow. Sat and Sun I lapped around the kitchen and living room trying to get rid of the gas pains! I was able to get myself up right from the start. It tells how to get up some where on this site. Roll over onto your side and push up with your elbow and other arm then rest a bit before you stand. You could feel a little light headed otherwise. You still should have someone around though just in case. If you have got the help definitely take it, Rest as much as you can. See you on the post op forum!!

Re: More comfortable being a caregiver.

I'd say you want someone close for the first 4 or 5 days. After that, everyone is different.

My surgery was on Monday, I went home Wednesday, & was home alone a good bit of Thursday, but had a neighbor close enough to call if needed.

Re: More comfortable being a caregiver.

I too am a caregiver to my mother (we live together) and yes it was hard having people come over to help with everything and to see my mother struggle to do things so she appeared more independent to others. But my Dr. gave me strict orders of no lifting(over 5 pounds), pushing, pulling, bending, stretching for 6 weeks!!! It was hard just sitting while others prepared our meals, cleaned, changed sheets, did the laundry etc. I just kept telling myself it's only temporary, things will be back to "normal" soon and it is. So hang in there, you'll be back in the saddle before you know it!

I feel the same way ,even thought of canceling surgery cause I am not sure the family will survive but guess what they will either survive or die off lol thinking they will pull it together

Re: More comfortable being a caregiver.

They will be ok. Let them consider it as a growing experience. Things won't be done like you want them done, but the details will still be there when you are able to tackle it.
