Knee immobilized...can I still have TVH??

I am scheduled for TVH or TAH/BSO on 3/3/09. I have an old knee injury from my Army days that has recurred in the form of a sprained ligament. My knee has been put in a splint that has immoblized it from upper thigh to mid calf. My ortho thinks it should be no problem for surgery, but I am freaking out!!! I have put in a call to my surgeon, but have yet to hear from them. The receptionist said I could just talk to them at my pre-op appointment, but the isn't unitl the day before my hyster is scheduled. Can they even still do a vaginal if I can't move my leg into the tright position? Not to mention the fact that walking is difficult right now. I can only imagine what it will be like after surgery. I am so stressing out right now!!!!!!!

Hi, try not to be so stressed out. Did you have the brace when your gyn scheduled the hysterectomy? Does the ortho want the brace on throughout the surgery? They probably can position you differently and perform a vaginal procedure. I personally would avoid LAVH because they change you leg positions during the surgery. Are you seeing your surgeon for the pre-op appointment? If so that should give them time to make arrangements. If you're really concerned would you consider opting for the TAH? Then your knee will not be nearly as much of a concern. Good luck

God luck at your Pre Op. As I indicated elsewhere one wouldn't choose open abdominal surgery without cause.

try not to panic sweetie you still have a few days to straighten this out. I would really start by making a phone call to your surgeon first thing tomorrow morning, and if they dont return your call, call again, and say its urgent and that you want to speak to him if possible, before you call, make a list of all the questions you need answered.
I didnt have a choice on my surgery because of the size of my uterus, but if I had a choice between vaginal or abdominal, I would choose abdominal. there are lots of things to consider between both, for example, if you are keeping your cervix, then it would have to be abdominal, the best thing is talk to your doctor and make sure he answers all your questions so you are comfortable with your surgery.
