Will a hysterectomy help my bloating?

This is the first thread I have started on this site so I hope I am doing everything correctly.

I am 50 years old. 3 1/2 years ago I had breast cancer. I had a lumpectomy and radiation and was put on Tamoxifen in January 2011. The drug has wreaked havoc on my female organs. I have two ovarian cysts, a fibroid, and a thickened endometrium. I was recommended to have both ovaries, tubes, and uterus out because of the abnormal cell activity there (considered pre-cancerous) and also to reduce my chance of a breast cancer recurrence. I am scheduled for this operation next Tuesday. I am getting the Robotic Surgery (is that DVH?)

Over the past few months I have noticed an enormous amount of bloating. I am an athlete. I run and lift weights and I have never had such a big belly in my life. It is not food-related. I have this from the moment I get up in the morning and it does not correlate with anything I've eaten. What's more, it seems to get worse after exercise. I went running this morning on an empty stomach and came back looking 4 months pregnant.

So I guess my question is, could my abnormal uterus and ovaries cause this type of bloating, and will this operation possibly alleviate the problem? I really don't want to get my hopes up. But I am really looking for an answer to this unexplained symptom and I wonder if all of these things that are growing in there is causing inflammation which leads to the bloating.

Re: Will this operation help my bloating?

For me, those abnormalities (adenomyosis and dermoid cyst) caused estrogen dominance which exacerbated the symptoms of peri-menopause making them unbearable. It felt like I had perpetual pre-menstrual bloating...For me it was "Good-bye Peri-menopausall Bloating", "Hello, Swelly Belly...but thankfully the swelly belly goes away! All of my other horrible peri-menopausal symptoms went away as well so I consider it a GREAT trade off. I had a painful cyst on my breast (for over a decade) that has finally gone away YAY. I am also HRT-free for over 4 months and doing great. Best wishes for your upcoming surgery and make sure to get your recovery area ready, HUGS CJ

Re: Will a hysterectomy help my bloating?

I had horrible bloating, which my doc and I think was caused by adenomyosis. I have not got the pathology back yet to confirm. Before my hysterectomy I would bloat with increased activity and would have pain no matter what I did.

Since the surgery it is better. But, I have swelly belly. Which feels like gas built up. I overdid it yesterday and was having pain last night. But, it has gotten much better.

So if you go ahead with the surgery expect to be swollen for some time( I have been told it can last up to a year). But it is different from before, if that makes sense?

I hope my jubberish helps you .

Re: Will a hysterectomy help my bloating?

I had horrible bloating before my surgery...almost to the point where it hurt and felt my belly would explode. I had my surgery a week ago and even though I have the "swelly belly" I can tell the bloating is gone. Not only that but I was getting up multiple times at night feeling like I had to go to the bathroom from the pressure. I have not gotten up once since the surgery. I think you will be very pleased with the results.

That's wonderful news. I get up many times during the night and I never made the connection.

Re: Will a hysterectomy help my bloating?

I've had the same premenstrual bloating problem, which got to the point of bloating constantly with my continuos bleeding.

My surgery was yesterday morning and my stomach is the most flat it's been since I had children. I realize swelly belly might crop up but so far so good.
