Post Op Grocery List
I am scheduled for a SAH on 6/21. It's just me and my 13 year old daughter so I am trying to stock up on much needed items now. Any suggested items food/other that I will definitely need on my road to recovery? I am on a budget and I don't want to wait until the last minute to purchase things.

Post Op Grocery List
I did not have too much of an appetite the first 2 weeks, so I mainly ate soup, yogurt, ice cream bars, fruit. Sad to say, my appetite has really picked up now. I bought things my sons could make for themselves--taco fixings, microwave popcorn, microwaveable meals, frozen pizza, lasagna, etc. Some of those frozen skillet meals in the packages like chicken teriyaki--my teen son had no problem fixing those. Now that I am cooking, I am able to fix healthier meals, but at least nobody starved. Convenience is the key. Buy things that require little or no prep--it won't last long, and if your daughter is not cooking for herself yet, you might buy some ground beef, cook it up, and freeze it in small ziplocs so she can microwave it and fix a taco, a burrito, whatever. The ready-made salads were also a help--dump in a colander, rinse, slice a tomato, and there was a salad. Throw in some (pre-cooked) chicken strips and some croutons, voila! grilled chicken salad.

My teenagers love that Easy Mac made by Kraft..you make it in the microwave..i think it's disgusting but they love it.....Our grocery store sells those bags of boneless frozen chicken breasts...go on sale every couple of weeks..if you have one of those small George Foreman grilling machines ( under $20 at Walmart) she can make hamburgers, chicken breasts..so easy and without using the stove or oven....actually pretty handy....also frozen veggies are a breeze in the microwave..get expensive though....my kids also love applesauce and canned fruit... As for you...I really did not feel like eating those first couple of weeks..I think the anesthesia and pain meds supress your appetite..I had bowls of cereal, cottage cheese and peaches, scrambled eggs....not a whole lot....at the end of the third week though I thought I had developed a tape worm..I could eat everything in sight.every thing is now back to normal at 6 weeks post op...best of luck..Sue

Post Op Grocery List
Hi!
I see your interests include cooking, so my list probably is something you've already got covered. At any rate, I'd suggest:
potatoes, carrots, dried beans/peas, rice, stocks/broths, canned soups/fruits/vegetables/meats (whichever ones you may like), frozen/canned juices, Jell-o -- anything with a long shelf life
I tried to envision what I'd put in a bomb shelter (I guess that SERIOUSLY dates me, doesn't it?)
Don't forget also things like detergents/bleach, whatever quantity would last you a month or two. If you buy them in large containers you might think about transferring some product into smaller containers (they'll weigh a lot less).
Good luck!

I want to add--be sure and check your toiletries--things like soap, deodorant, shampoo, toothpaste, toilet tissue. You will not be driving for awhile, so make sure you have enough of these things on hand so you don't run out for the first couple of weeks home. One of the worst things about the initial recovery was not being able to just hop in the car and run to the store when I noticed we were out of something. Sending my son and husband to the grocery store with a list was a nightmare. They tried, but we always ended up with many things we didn't need, and they inevitable left off something I wanted.

I also wanted to say that those George Foreman type grills are great! Especially for kids (or husbands like mine) who don't cook much & need instructions for everything! Things like chicken breasts (boneless) cook in 5-8 minutes.
I'd stock up on:
Boneless chicken breasts
Baking potatoes
Frozen vegetables
Cereal
Powdered milk (so trips to the store for milk every other day will be unnecessary...and, the family will get used to it despite their initial ughs!)
Fresh fruit, like apples & oranges
Microwave popcorn
popscicles
Ice cream
Toilet paper, soap, etc.
Take care,
Robin

I stocked up on soup, mostly "blander", non cream soups for those first few days. Also, some ( most) pain meds require you eat something when you take them, so I had crackers on hand and Goldfish. A few of those with some water was enough for me.
Others that I had on hand were popsicles, ice cream, bottled water, juices. I stayed away from coffee and stocked up on all kinds of teas, herbal, flavored, Asian etc....that made me feel better.
Fresh fruit is great, but you can't get that too far ahead of time.
My appetite is still not what it was pre-surgery, NOT that I am complaining, so I am still eating alot of the above. I joke that my Dr. stapled my stomach while he was in there..lol
hope this helps.

Stocking Up on Goodies for Hubby
After finding out when my surgery date was, I cruised through the grocery store the next day and picked up items like complete dinners in a box type meals, some of the frozen veggie/pasta stir fries, a couple of pre-packaged slow-cooker meals that did not require too many pre-cook preparation, plus yogurt, fruit, and soymilk, plus some granola cereals for breakfast.
I also shopped with the idea of easy preparation for me when I felt better and could let my husband off the hook. That way, with the instant preparation for most of the meals, I would not be on my feet for a maximum amount of time and then I could be done with it, but would still feel like I had created a tasty, nourishing meal for the two of us.
