Horseback riding?

I have a laproscopy planned for tomorrow. My doc says I might be able to ride my horse in 2 weeks. Is she kidding?
Has anybody ridden a horse after surgery?

Re: Horseback riding?

there were some ladies who were posting on here a few weeks ago, and most of them were back on their horses in about 6 weeks. maybe you can find their old thread.

Re: Horseback riding?

Hi,
I am one of those that celticknotwork is refering to.

I had my TAH exactly 10 wks ago yesterday and I started riding the end of my sixth week.

I started out by just walking around for about 15 minutes to get the feeling back. I used my abdominal binder the first time and I have been using it since then. I am back to riding at least five times a week.

For the most part I have been mostly walking but that is do to the fact that my horse and I are so severely out of shape.

The last time I got a work out when riding was in September 2009. Then I had 8 wks of tendonitis in my shoulder, several 3 foot blizzards, a hysterectomy, etc. So the two of us have to slowly build ourselves up. His issues are that he is overweight, feet need to be done so he is a little off, and he is lazy.

My advice would be when you are able to ride; take it easy and slow.

I really did not have any pain or discomfort in my abdomen. I just felt a little bit of soreness in my inner thighs from not having ridden in 6 wks. I felt like a bowlegged cowboy that has been on a cattle drive for 10 hrs straight.

I just try to do a little more each time I ride. Last week I actually rode my horse and my sister's horse.

Happy trails to you.

Re: Horseback riding?

I would think 2 weeks would be a little iffy - i am at the 2 wk point right now (davinci) and as much as I love horses and riding i dont see me getting on one right now.

That said, everyone is different and if you feel up to it and are cleared by your doc, go for it! just remember to go slow & easy to start with.

Re: Horseback riding?

I waited for at least six weeks before I started to ride again. But I would never had thought of riding at two weeks; I could barely walk down the street.

Maybe the type of surgery would make a difference, who knows.
