one day post hysterectomy with surprise endo diagnosis

I just had a total vaginal hysterectomy yesterday, keeping my ovaries. I was diagnosed with pre-cancer on my cervix last summer, CINIII severe dysplasia. Dr first tried a cone biopsy to remove it, but upon recheck 3 months later I still had cancer cells and after discussion we decided to do the full hysterectomy but keeping my ovaries as he said I still had a good 10-15 years of use left in them.

Yesterday morning I went in for surgery, he planned to do laparoscopic, but was able to do it without any incisions at all. However today when he came to talk to me prior to release from the hospital, he told me that while he was operating he found a chocolate cyst on one of my ovaries. I had endometriosis and didn't know anything about it. I knew I had pain from time to time but assumed it was because of my cervix. He told me he made a judgement call and decided to leave the ovaries and just drained the cyst. He wants to keep an eye on it and said that down the road we may have to go back in laparoscopically and remove the ovary.

I'm curious if anyone else has had this happen after their surgery? Finding out they had other issues going on that they didn't know about until the hysterectomy? I am glad my dr decided to leave my ovary intact, I am worried about hormonal imbalances. Am I wrong for feeling that way, or should I be concerned about the endometriosis now that the cancer part is resolved?

Re: one day post surgery

I had my hysterectomy for suspected Ovarian Cancer. Turns out that I had a nasty case of endometriosis instead. My ovaries were encased in chocolate cysts that could not be removed, so I lost them both. I'm so happy you were able to save yours. It may be that later on you may need to have your endo treated again, but IF that happens, please seek out an endometriosis specialist. It is so great that you got to keep your ovaries because HRT can be difficult and with endo even harder (I'm dealing with that right now). If I were you, I wouldn't just worry about the endo, but if you start having symptoms again, seek out and endo specialist, for now, just know that you are a SURVIVOR, and you need to rest and recover. That's your job. Not worry.

No but similar experience with with my ablation. Doctor said it went well and should have normal periods however I began to bleed daily since the ablation and they dr said it was because of the fibroids. I said what fibroids? She responded oh you didn't know you had fibroids. I really would have liked that info before the ablation.
