TAH: suffering bowel prep for TAH tomorrow...

TAH/BSO tomorrow...bowel prep made me miserable, dizzy, nausea, chills...,this is supposed to be the easy part?? Finally paged Dr. Pushed fluids all day, still very dehydrated. Dr sent DH out for gatorade & saltines despite liquid only orders. Don't dr's think to adjust for body size??? I am small, mag citrate + 4 dulcolax within 4 hrs was too much!
Pls keep me in yr prayers tomorrow.....

The cit/mag yesterday did nothing to me. The GoLytely... ugh. I am bloated and burping this nasty stuff. I am nauseous. I would kill for saltines. I have drank all but a half quart of this nasty stuff - I'll be throwing up if I drink any more.

The bowel prep I got was not dependent on weight - the paper I got was a copy of a copy of a copy type of copy ... and I've been told that I have the 'standard' bowel prep.

I agree that the bowel prep should be 'individualized' and based on weight/size/sensitivity to laxatives/past experience with them... there can't be one size fits all.
I too had a difficult time with the bowel prep, was instructed to drink 2 bottles of magnes. citrate in 2 hours.....difficult and disgusting indeed.
The effects of that, combined with my heavy bleeding that I had 5 days leading up to the surgery and being on a liquid only diet the day prior all contributed to me being severely dehydrated and the OR nurses not being able to start an IV line on me the morning of my surgery.... I normally have very health, "plump" veins, and they had to poke around, including the infiltration of one of my veins, about 5 times before they were successful. My arms look like a warzone, even 8 days out from my surgery.
The day of and after surgery I was absolutely miserable and had a very low blood pressure--70/40-- and I definitely attribute it to not only being anemic, but super dehydrated going into the surgery.
I am certainly not advocating skipping the bowel prep if your doctor orders it, but I definitely am an advocate of speaking up for yourself and asking if perhaps the dosaging of the bowel prep meds might be adjusted based on somebody's size/weight/etc....

well.... I'm waiting for my ride to the castle and I'm still "Going Lytely" - I hope they have a cure for this at the hospital or it's gonna get messy when they put me out.

I did one 10oz bottle of Mag Citrate and added crystal light packet to it. Took a little of the edge of but was still nasty. My pre-op instructions were eat light until 6pm, clears after 6pm and nothing after midnight. My clears were water, fruit juice and jell-o. Wish you guys the best.
