puzzled??? A couple of questions

Ok I am going for my TAH BSO in 2 days and I have been told not to do an enema which I like the idea of but have heard from so many that they have had to do at least a fleet enema so am not sure what .....if anything......will happen on the table, and also I have been told that the nurse will give me ativan to relax me if I need it prior to going into the surgery. I have not seen anyone talking about this............Is it normal ???

puzzled??? A couple of questions

We all seem to worry about the enema issue at some point!

The best advice I can give you is to call your dr's office and ask about it.

Many drs/hospitals want you to do bowel cleansing before you go to the hospital, and many want you to do it when you are there.
Some don't require you to do it.

The important thing is that you do not take it upon yourself to use any product without discussing it with your dr.

give them a call and get some peace of mind!

best wishes for your surgery and recovery.

puzzled??? A couple of questions

They told me at the hospital to drink the awful stuff for a bowel prep. (can't think of the name of it.)

I talk to my doctor about it and he said to skip the bowel prep that I would be fine.

I took an exlax the day before surgery and it cleared me out pretty good. If anything happened during surgery they did not tell me.

They put something in my IV to relax me before surgery but by then it was almost time to go into operating room.

Everything should be okay. The surgery is not near as bad as you build it up to be. My hospital stay was really good and I am now 15 days postop.

GOOD LUCK

puzzled??? A couple of questions

Pokey,
I did not do a bowel prep or enema and everything was just fine. Luckily I did have a bowel movement the morning before my surgery. Just make sure you drink lots of water and walk afterwards so you don't get constipated. They will probably give you Colace (stool softner) in the hospital. If they don't, ask them for it. Take care.

puzzled??? A couple of questions

I had the same concern. I'm due for a TAH/BSO on the 29th. I had to find out because I read of many sisters having to do a bowel prep. My doctor's office said that I wouln't need to do a prep and that they wouldn't do an enema either. Wow, lucky me!

I decided that since I was paying for all of this that "question asking" was my right and "question answering" was their service to me. So ask and you'll be prepared instead of curious. It is helping me now to find out as much as possible. As I read daily from this site I feel more and more prepared for my day at the castle!

Best wished to you on your day.

puzzled??? A couple of questions

I did not need a bowl prep, my dr didn't even do bloodwork at my pre-op visit, they took blood from me before my surgery. I made sure I ate light to help with the gas afterwards. And all went well. When I arrived at the hospital I cried, but now looking back I felt like a jerk, there was no reason to cry. Good Luck the waiting is truely the worst part.

puzzled??? A couple of questions

Thank you all for your support. I did question the nurse twice and her answer was the same but everyone on here at the time was talking about it and my mum said "so what you are just going to go on the table" That is what got me worried. So thank you everyone you have laid another fear to rest. Am off to the castle tomorrow. Those of you going with me gl and will see you on the post op. take care all
