Flat out tell the doctor(s) you are not doing anything until everything has been fully explained to you because you are the patient and you have rights and you don't have to show up for the day of the surgery if you don't feel it is warranted or if it hasn't been explained thoroughly enough. Never do anything or allow anyone to do anything to you unless you feel comfortable with it.

I agree with davinci. My GYN says the average age is 51, too. I can't believe your drs would tell you you should have been through menopause at 48! Every woman is different.
My periods began to change in my early 40's (perimenopause) but my GYN NEVER suggested a hysterectomy because of it. My periods became irregular and I often had longer periods and breakthrough bleeding, which sounds similar to you. He treated me with progesterone - mostly just to calm my hormones and regulate the bleeding. I'm 47 and kept my ovaries so I can have natural menopause. My GYN understood that I may not reach that menopause for several more years!
A hysterectomy should be the last option when everything else has failed, not an elective surgery to rid yourself of the nuisance! Don't go into this without knowing exactly why it is necessary for YOU only. If these three doctors can't give you a straight answer, find one who can!

Marpri, it is necessary that you understand why before you have the surgery. I agree with the previous reply. Four years ago I had excessive bleeding during and after my periods for 3 years. I had become very anemic and three day hospital stay. My gyno dr then did an ablation procedure (knowing that I was not able to have children.) That helped for the past four years (NO bleeding or spotting.) Then at the beginning of this year I had two very painful and heavy bleeding periods and the spotting continued. I went to a doctor that a friend of mine worked with for a number of years. After a pap and ultrasound in May I had a biopsy (precancerous.) 6/16/08, I had a TAH, PTL it all came back negative. But it is very important that you understand why they want to do surgery and give you all options before that happens. Other than the tumor I had I could not afford to become anemic again. I will pray that God gives you the wisdom and understanding for you and your doctor.
