D&C went well, test results not good

I had a hysteroscopic biopsy and D&C a week ago, which went much better than I had feared; today I got the results from the pathology tests. I have complex hyperplasia with atypia, which as far as I understand is that the tissue is not healthy cells, but not yet cancer. My doctor is referring me to a gynecologic-oncologist, and recommending that I get a hysterectomy to prevent the development of cancer.

I will hopefully know more once I meet whoever the new doctor will be. I am still kind of in shock, even though I knew this was an possible outcome. And I have a lot of questions, and am not even sure where to ask them, or if this is the right forum...

I have been in menopause naturally for the last six years, so if they take out my lady bits, will that affect my hormones?
We have no history of ovarian problems in my family, do my ovaries still produce hormones after menopause, and can I keep them?
I have a good intimate relationship with my sweetheart currently, and reading about how so many ladies find that after the hysterectomy that they lose interest and desire for sex for many months or years really frightens me, where are the stories about folks who are doing well in that respect, long term...
and, of course, I am worried about having to take such a long time away from work without income, and how to arrange for enough assistance with my daily life (sweetie lives about 100 miles away) for the weeks and weeks I will be recovering.

Sorry to be such a downer, but I was hoping that the first surgery would take care of the problems

Re: D&C went well, test results not good

So sorry for the diagnosis. Anything cancer or precancer is scary but it's good you'll be seeing a GYN onc as they are the experts. For cancer they usually take ovaries but I'm not sure they always do for complex hyperplasia, that is a question to bring up. I was monopausal at surgery and still had more menopause symptoms, but that is not always the case, I think I'm in the minority. I had an easy recovery, and there are a lot of preparation hints on this site. I needed minimal assistance, but there are hints for women living alone on the site, too. Really for me it was the emotional part that was hard, the physical part was easy. If you can, ask for support from family and friends, and post any concerns here and in the cancer concerns forum. We are here to help you through this. Let us know how the next appt goes and how you are doing.

Re: D&C went well, test results not good

Indigotiger, So sorry you found out this news. I am very glad, however, that you have a chance to catch it before it turns cancerous. You are in no way a downer - I think we all can empathize with what you may be feeling. Post and ask as many questions as you like; I know I do/will. Once you meet with the oc/gyn you will know better what type of hysterectomy is recommended. Then you can research, read and ask questions here. I have a single friend who had a TAH a few years ago and she has no family in the area. A group of us friends took turns helping her out for the first week or so. Hang in there and keep us posted.
