Leaving ovaries?

So my doctor plans to leave both my ovaries since I am only 32, but I get fairly large cysts on my ovaries. My last one was 8cm. Has anyone else who gets large cysts been left with thier ovaries even though the doc was aware your cysts get large?

Re: Leaving ovaries?

My dr said if there were any cysts she would take mine...luckily no cysts so got to keep mine. I would keep asking and keep researching and you make the best decision for you

Re: Leaving ovaries?

I get the feeling its not up to me It would seem that she will just make the best decision for me regardless. I will be questioning her furthur though about the topic when I got for my pre-op. I just wasn't sure if most ladies got to make that decision when they got cysts or if thier doc made it for them.

Re: Leaving ovaries?

I would think that it would be your decision. I could see if they were perfectly healthy, then I could see her not wanting to remove them, but u have a history of cysts. if u want them removed, I would tell her that u do want them removed. if she won't agree, u should probably get another doc. however, u should first confirm w another doc what the protocol is. good luck and I hope that u get what *you* want.

Re: Leaving ovaries?

same boat here. i have PCOS & severe endo. My surgery is tentatively scheduled for dec 5th, as long as the dr can book the OR. Already signed consent and everything.

He wants to leave my ovaries because of my age. I also get cysts, and they are SO PAINFUL when they burst. If he leaves my ovaries, I will still have the possiblity of those painful cysts. Part of the reason I chose to DO the surgery because of the hope that i would be in LESS pain and not have the horrible periods. but if Im still going to get cysts, they are still going to burst on occasion...

I really DO TRUST my dr. ive had the same gyno for 11 years almost. Hes been there through the birth of my son, and all of my pregnancy losses and never steered me wrong. he SAYS the benefits to keeping them, outweigh the risks of keeping them. Im trying to believe that.

Re: Leaving ovaries?

A second opinion is always good. This is your body and you have a say in it. My doctor left both ovaries, but she removed a cyst from one. I didn't know about that until afrer I woke up. She didn't think that it would be a recurring problem. For that I have to trust her judgement. She also said that she wuldn't remove healthy organs and it was better for me to keep them.
You know your body, if the cysts burst and cause you pain I would think that your doctor would remove them. So as the others have said get a second opinion and go from there

Lots of ((HUGS)) to you

Re: Leaving ovaries?

rusty-blue we have the same surgury date! Its nice to hear I am not alone. I do trust my doc, I just don't understand leaving the ovaries when they cause half my misery. I have a hormone inbalance...not enough progesterone. Taking out my uterus will end the horribly painful periods...but leaving the ovaries will still make the rest of my problems stay. She says that she is positive that losing weight will make my hormones and ovaries return to a "normal" area...but I have been overweight since childhood and although I am working very hard to correct it...having a hormone imbalance doesn't make it easy!
