Emotional Recovery

Hi ladies, I am 27 and having my TAH April 23. I have had 3 other abdominal surgeries ( 2 c-secs and a tubal) already so Im pretty prepared for the physical recovery. Its the emotional one Im really scared about. It is already making me crazy not knowing how I am going to react to the HRT. I know my Dr said she is putting my on the highest dose of estrogen she can right after surgery. I am just so worried about sexual responce, moodiness, massive weight gain, crying, flipping out, you name it Im freaking out about it. Oddly enough, this is my biggest worry about the whole thing. Can someone please help me. I need to know that I am going to be ME after my surgery.

it will be okay.

After my surgery, I felt like me - only not the me I had been for all of the time up to that point - it was a relieved, at-peace me.

Prior to surgery, I was a miserable person - too many migraines, too much ovary pain, too many hormone and mood ups and downs - I was a wreck. I wasn't sure who I was, except for crazy with female issues.

So you will be you, but better once you recover. A year and a half later (almost), I do not regret having my hyster (TVH/BSO). I have lost over 50 pounds and I am in a completely different place in my life.

Have faith - you will be fine. Probably more than fine.

Emotional Recovery

Hi SRD513,

Your concerns are normal. I remember being scared to death that I was going to "become someone else" .... but, I am the same now as I was. For the first few weeks I was a little weepy and for many months my memory didn't work very well. Memory issues still come and go. Actually, if anything, I am a little calmer because my hormones were out of balance before my surgery .

It may take a year to get your HRT balanced for you, and during that time you may have some struggles with some of the symptoms you mentioned.

Unfortunately, there is no way to know who will have long term problems and who will not. That is why it is important to make sure that we try all the options before resorting to a hysterectomy.

s and Best Wishes,
Kay
