Need a full-liquid diet pre-op -- anyone else do this?
Hello ladies...its me again...now we are 14 days away from the big day and my trip to the castle...
I have a serious problem with IBS and take meds and peri colace daily for ...What I would like to know is, has anyone gone on a full liquid diet before surgery?..
I was going to do Full liquids this week and then change to clear liguids next week so that my system gets a break and I don;t have any issues after surgery with moving my bowels...
I am not at all nervous or stressed about the TAH..I am very stressed over the thought of not being able to poop after surgery!!!!!.....
anyone with a similar experience or advice?...

I would suggest that you check with your doctor about this. It's important to keep up your nutritional intake to promote healing. Some women are required to do a bowel prep before surgery that involves liquid diets, so this should be something your doctor would be familiar with.
I didn't have to do this, and in fact I had a Christmas dinner the day before my surgery. I pooped for the first time four days post-op. I was relieved to be done with it, but I had found that high-fiber food and lots of water helped a great deal.

i would definitely talk to your dr about that. you dont want to go into the surgery without the right nutrition, it could compromise your surgery and healing.

Thanks..I did infact check with my Dr.. they said for me to stay on my meds and do the full liquid diet this week and go to clear liquids next week...lots of water and I will also be doing a bowel prep the day before, not because its required but because I will feel better...
The Dr. said that since I am in good health other wise and because I am young healing will not be compromised...
I am also drinking Naked drinks which have protein in them and taking my MVI...
check out the Nakedbrand juices and smoothies..THEY ARE SO GOOD!!!

I stuck to soup and other easy-to-digest foods for a couple of days before my hysterectomy. I wasn't required to do any kind of bowel prep, but like you wanted to make sure I didn't have any issues with constipation afterward. It definitely helped - 36 hours after surgery, first bm, no issues with passing.

I'm so glad to hear that you spoke with your about this.
It's important to do what the doctor recommends, and not take on anything "on your own" no matter how helpful you think it might be. You did the right thing and got the doctor's approval.
I have not done a full liquid diet, but I hope some more (((sisters))) who have will come along to share their experiences.

I was required to do a bowel prep the day before with a clear liquid diet. My dr. also insisted on a specific bowel prep kit, which my insurance didn't cover. Do what your surgeon recommends. Hopefully, they know what's best for your situation. It was a relief to have an empty bowel pre-op, since I didn't have a BM until 3 days after surgery.

I am required to do a 2 day bowel prep. First day is soft foods (soups, milkshakes, pudding, etc.) 2nd day - day before surgery is clear liquid only and a prescription bowel prep. I plan on enjoying my meals prior to this!!
