Kind of a funny ?
I just got my navel pierced last May. I realize that I will have to take it out prior to surgery. But will this cause any other problems with surgery since I'm having LSH? Also, if anyone has had this problem...how long before surgery did you need to take out the piercing?
Thanks!

I would advise you to call your surgeon concerning your questions. There is a lot of manipulation through the navel with an LSH as well as stitches. Plus, there will be swelling and pain after the procedure, so that's something to keep in mind too.
I had my LSH on 1/5/05 and feel great. I do have some swelly belly still and my incisions are healing nicely. My surgeon put Dermabond (glue) over my dissolvable stitches, if they do that, it may glue your piercing! I'd definitely check into it.
Good luck! Let us know how you're doing.

Tink,
I had my nose pierced in October of 03 and I didn't think it was going to be a problem when I went in for surgery since they weren't doing anything to my nose. However....right before I went into the O.R. the anestesiologist (spelling?) made me take it out. It grew back together while I was in the hospital and for goodness sake I'm not going back to get it re-pierced (too much pain!) I would venture to guess that you're going to have to take it out.

I figured that I would have to take it out. I was just concerned if it would cause anyproblems even if I take it out for surgery. I will say this....navel piercings are a great way to hide the scar from laproscopic surgery. I had my gallbladder and appendix removed with laproscopic and my piercing hides the scar in my bellybutton. LOL If my piercing does close I will definately have it redone...I love it!
Thanks for the help with this semi-silly question.

Hi;
I don't know if this applies because I only have my ears pierced. My step-daughter had her nose pierced and her job refuses to let her wear it. I spent $50 on her piercing and was not about to let it close so I found her some clear plastic nose studs. No one can see them unless you know it's there or you are really looking.
She wears them to work and her boss doesn't notice.
I was just thinking perhaps they make something like that for the navel?
Also, please ask your surgeon about it if you do find such a thing. You don't wnat to leave yourself open for infection or something!

All Body Piercings should be removed before any surgery.
There is a risk that before you can get the piercing back in it will close and have to be re-pierced. (1 of mine closed during a previous surgery, so had to have it re-done, I have also worked with a Tattooist/Body Piercer)
If you can get it back in straight after surgery all well and good. But I don't realy advise this as they will be going in through the navel, so there will be some truama in the surounding tissue. There will be some swelling also and most bars and rings can only accomidate a small amout of swelling.
The other reason for removal is the risk of bacterial infection and cross infection, the ring/bar you will be putting in will not be steril any longer, and you will be putting your body through an unnessercary risk of infection.
I realy would just take it out a couple of week prior to surgery, and let it heal fully, then once your navel is healed from surgery get it re-done.
Hope this helps.

Thank you for the advice ladies. Tanis, that does make sense to take it out a couple of weeks prior to surgery just to be safe and let it heal. As of today, I am two weeks from surgery. So, I will take it out today. I will definately wait a few weeks to have it redone too. Don't want to do it with a swollen belly.
Thanks!
