I kept my ovaries. Why am I a mess

I am 6 weeks post op. I kept both of my ovaries so I didn't think there would be any hormonal issues but I am a mess. I just want to sit and cry and pout and whine. Idk what is wrong with me. Has anyone else experienced this?

Re: I kept my ovaries. Why am I a mess

Wow.. I was about to post the same question. Today is day 4 for me after having a DvH. Only uterus and cervix removed. From my first day, I have been an emotional mess. I get upset pretty quickly and will cry instantly. I can't explain it. My poor husband has been the victim and is soo confused. I also want to know if this is normal. You are not alone!

I'm also 6 weeks post-op and still quite emotional and upset. It's not hormones, it's shock - we had major surgery and an important part of our bodies was removed! It's a big deal!! It's totally normal that it takes time to come to terms with. Be nice to yourself, cry if you need to and talk to people who understand. We'll get through this!

Re: I kept my ovaries. Why am I a mess

There are some great articles on this site that talk about why, even though we have kept our ovaries, we are still so emotional. It has been so helpful to me to understand the reasons why I cry uncontrollably and get so angry. It is normal and will take time to adjust. If you haven't read the articles section, I so recommend it. Most of my questions were answered there. Good luck with your healing.

Re: I kept my ovaries. Why am I a mess

The blood supply to your ovaries has most likely been disrupted. This diagram will show you how different women are "wired" so when you look at the diagram, please realize that the uterine arteries have been cut and sutured. So you can see that in some of us, the blood supply is limited if not completely cut off and that can definitely cause menopausal issues.

Re: I kept my ovaries. Why am I a mess

There are 2 components to the emotional side of this surgery. Both have been described by others above. One is your ovaries shutting down, even if only temporarily, and the other is the whole surgical trauma. I have to admit, I found it the worst part of the whole experience. If you find it continues, I would consult your doctor.

Thanks ya'll. I'm glad this seems to be "normal" and I'll read up on it. I think some of it is I'm ready to be bounced back and feeling good and I'm still tired and don't have much energy!

In addition to possible hormonal causes, I think this makes a lot of sense. I noticed when I had major surgery last year (unrelated to hyster) that once I had desire to do things but had not the energy that I became extremely depressed and emotional. I eventually got through it. (I do see a therapist but the thing that really made the difference was when I started to feel better.) So far, I'm doing mostly OK with this surgery, though I am very aware of not feeling well enough to do anything yet and hoping I don't fall back into the depression again. (I have a history of depression even with surgery.)

Thanks to Danni for the diagram. That was really interesting and I was surprised to learn that not every one's body is "wired" the same way. I kept one ovary and so far I haven't really noticed anything I would attribute to hormonal changes so I am counting myself lucky and wondering if maybe I'm one of the ovary artery only people. Fascinating.

I have battled the big D myself! I'm so afraid of going through it again!! Good luck with your recovery!

Re: I kept my ovaries. Why am I a mess

My doctor had a great suggestion. She reminded me that because I kept my ovaries I would still have "that time of the month" The hormone spikes would cause cravings, bloating and emotional outbursts, just like before! She suggested that I may want to mark my cycles on the calendar to get an idea of when it may happen so I would know why I was struck with the sudden urge to throw something ;-) I was lucky to be fairly regular before surgery, so when I was abnormally obsessed with ice cream this week and snapped at my husband and burst into tears, I was able to tie it to the fact that my period was due to hit tomorrow. Not saying that this is the case with you, but am reminded just how much our hormones and our emotions are tied together!
