Does anyone ever regret?
I am 31 y.o., married to Dh for 13 yrs, and we have no kids. I have PCOS and have been bleeding excessively for the past 8-9 years. I got really anemic four years ago, and had to have a blood transfusion -4 Units. At the same time, I had a D&C, Hysteroscopy and because of the symptoms I was having, they said it was my gallbladder and took that out too. What it turned out to be was a pulmonary embolism. Almost croaked!!! Spent 5 days in critical care unit at hospital, 14 days total in the hospital. Bleeding continued, pills never worked and since the PE, my hematologist did not want me on BC pills or anything relating to hormones. So, to combat my anemia, I get Iron IV weekly at my hematologist's office. I lose too much to supplement adequately with pills. I finally talked thru it with my hubby and went thru my options with ob/gyn. We both came to the same conclusion - hysterectomy! Scheduled to have it done on 3/5 - since no fibroids or endo, he's planning on doing it totally laparoscopically, taking the uterus and cervix. My hubby seems to be having second thoughts. I've lost all quality of life for all of my 20's because of this bleeding, and totally open to adopting, we're just not ready. No one that i've talked has ever said doing a hysterectomy is something that they regret, but this is a wider forum. Oh, I can't have kids anyway because of the PCOS I don't ovulate and cannot take pills to induce. I am committed to my decision and seeing this as the beginning of my new much better life. Does anyone ever have regrets?

Does anyone ever regret?
I had a TVH on 2/4/08 for uterine prolapse. I do not regret my decision. I have talked to other women who have had a hysterectomy and they have informed me that it was the best thing they ever did. Good luck.

Hi gldngrl77!
Goodness, it sounds like you have been through a lot in recent years, and that's a shame.
The concept of regret, in terms of having a hysterectomy, is quite mind-boggling to me because (unlike some fantasy movies) life doesn't offer "do-overs" for anyone, that I know of. Those that regret having the surgery have no way of knowing how life would have been for them if they hadn't have had it. Things may have been worse.
In my opinion, you are in the best years of your life and you should take every opportunity to make those years healthy and happy ones.
I'm sending positive thoughts your way for a successful surgery, an uneventful recovery, and a future full of happiness and satisfaction.
Many s and Best Wishes,

I am so sorry to hear that you have had it so rough! I empathize so much with you because I struggled for years to make my decision to have surgery. I am 41 and have been married to DH for 18 years. We have not been able to have children. Until my PAH on 2/19 I had been bleeding excessively for more than 5 years. I had bleeding submucosal fibroids at a very narrow part of my uterus. At the end of all of my surgeries and treatments there was just one fibroid that could not be removed, and it was the greatest source of my problems.
To give you a little background on my fight,,, I had an abdominal myomectomy, 3 d & c's, a hysteroscopic myomectomy, more than a year of the hormone Lupron Depot and my latest and last attempt was acupunture and Chinese herbs. Not to mention that in the middle of all of this, I had 1 blood transfusion. My hysterectomy is very new (2/19) but what I can tell you is that when I woke up from anesthesia and Dr. told me that everything had gone really well (and i got to keep my ovaries and cervix), I all of the sudden felt this great burden lift away from me and realized that I was finally free from the sentence that I had been locked in for so many years. It's incredible but in these days since the surgery all I can think about is the fact that I will finally be able to enjoy these waning days of my youth! And you have 10 more than me to enjoy! Loosing the quality of our lives is such a shame and gaining it back is such a gift!
Look, I didn't want my suffering uterus to be the center of my life anymore. It was often the focus of my conversations, robbed me of my sex life, my vital energy, my work days, parties, vacations, it embarrased me, made me sad and caused my DH, friends and family a huge amount of worry and anguish. I thought I might regret the surgery but do you know what?

Oh and goldengirl 77, I congradulate you for your commitment and the fact that you clearly see that this is a new beginning for you. I've already begun mine and it's awesome. And I look in the mirror, and I still see the the same woman standing in front of me as I saw before. Bless you and good luck. And here's to the future!!!!!

I am so sorry you have gone thru all that....you are young, and after the surgery you will see how much better you are going to feel....I have been struggling with endometriosis for over 20 years, because of endo, I count not get pregnant, I have been married to my DH for 27 years, and 20 years ago we adopted a little girl (she was 6 weeks old), now she is 20 and she has been a blessing to us.
why is your hubby having second thoughts? you are keeing your ovaries, so you wont have the hot flashes etc...your life its going to change for the better.
blessings,

Does anyone ever regret?
Hi!
Sadly, there are women who do regret their decision to have a hysterectomy. One has only to read through some of the forums on this site to find a lot of very unhappy women and their stories of how their lives have changed--and not for the better. Unfortunately, there's no way to know in advance if you'll be one who thinks it's the best thing ever or the worst. We can't promise you that you'll be glad if you go through with the surgery but we'll sure be here to support you--whether you have the surgery or not.
You mentioned in your post that you don't have fibroids and you don't have endo. Did you and your doctor discuss the possibility of doing an ablation? Sometimes that procedure is effective at controlling excessive bleeding but of course there's no way to know if it would work if you don't try it. If you tried it and it wasn't successful, you could then opt to have the hysterectomy. If you're interested in information about alternatives to the hysterectomy, you can check through this link: Hysterectomy Options Checkpoint. If you're not a candidate for alternative procedures, the information in that link may be helpful for other Sisters reading this thread who have the same concerns.
It's a big decision and if you've carefully explored the options, gotten at least one additional medical opinion, done your research and know the possible consequences and risks, then you've done your part to ensure that this is the right decision for you.
I'm sending all best wishes!
