Re: shortness of breath

Insomnia is common after surgery. The shortness of breath, however, should be reported to your doctor right away as it can be a symptom of a pulmonary embolism.

Re: shortness of breath

Hi, I had extreme shortness of breath in the hospital the day after my surgery, it was a bit scary and they did an EKG and cat scan, found nothing, no clots or embolism, thank goodness. It felt more like an asthmatic or allergic reaction to me, possibly to the painkillers or the anesthesia, I'm guessing. It lasted for a while to a less acute degree, but for a least a week, I would occasionally feel slightly dizzy and short of breath, and my lungs felt congested with difficulty breathing especially laying on my back at night. A humidifier helped. Also, starting HRT helped for me with the dizzyness and insomnia, as both my ovaries were removed. Surgery is really hard on the respiratory system I'm thinking. I'm feeling better now, two weeks later, but I don't think my respiratory system will be really back to normal until I can start getting some exercise. I've been trying to breathe deeply. But you should call your doctor and let them know about your shortness of breath if they don't know about it yet, they may want to do some tests to rule out the dangerous stuff.

Re: shortness of breath

Call your dr asap. It could be a blood clot in the lungs or just a reaction to a medication. You want anything bad ruled out though!

Re: shortness of breath

I had SOB post op... turned out to be internal bleeding in the abdom cavity (blood from surgery... wasn't active)... Had a laparoscopy to confirm (camera thru belly button) and they drained it out...felt much better after! Good luck! Hope you're ok!
